A "Mother's" advice

I had a baby shower on Saturday. I was sitting with the mother to be and her SIL - who has not children. Just a fur baby.  The mother to be asked, what is easier, puppy or infant.  The SIL said the infant because all they do is sleep.  And she has extensive baby sitting experience to back this up.
I said a puppy is easier. If you want to run to the store, the puppy stays home. With an infant, you have to put them in car seat, into car, etc.  The SIL's response was the car seat just clicks in and you take the car seat in with you. Its simple.
In my experience - boy does she have a lot to learn when she has a baby.

  • Definitely a puppy. Babies are a lot of work!

  • I just had this convo with friends last week.  No comparison!  A puppy is so much easier!!

  • @Baker_Bride - what a good point. I kinda want to email the mother to be and say her SIL doesn't know what she is talking about.  That it is normal to feel overwhelmed with an infant. It is not a piece of cake, etc.   But its not my place and we are not that close.

  • I always want to bring up the whole "well I carried my babies for 9 months and delivered them" argument as to why puppies are easier than babies (as if there ever needed to be any justification with that) but then I remembered that some women do not do that because they can't or choose not to. I'm sure that one day I will encounter some person who not only places pets and children on the same level but also dares to compare adopting a child and adopting/buying a pet. We have friends who are very big dog people. Their pets are their family and whenever I mention anything about how DS would keep me up at night with his teething or wonder weeks or how he would put everything in his mouth they would always come back with an "oh, I know! It's so hard when they do XYZ because...." I'm like um no. You have a pet and I have a child. BIG difference. Ugh. Perhaps this is my UO or FFFC for this week.

  • Well that and you didn't just undergo the physical feat of birthing anything with a puppy. Your hormones haven't changed. You don't feel anxiety and guilt over how to feed a puppy, just feed it what your vet recommends.

Maybe the SIL is one of those weird people who does have the weird hormonal thing and feeding anxiety over a puppy. Maybe she also has one who tears apart everything. Oh and maybe she also takes her dog with her everywhere, so it is a challenge for her. Along with the doggie daycares and spas, the organic dog food, puppy pedicures, luxury dog beds, froufy doggie sweaters, dainty diapers, and socializing classes, maybe she is frazzled because to her a puppy is a lot of work. I feel sorry for her kid if she ever has one.

But raising a human baby I would believe is a lot more work.
  • ALL OF THIS

I wonder if this women's puppy will take care of her in her old age?
