Sleeping through the night

How are your babies sleeping at night? My LO (12 weeks old) has made it from 11pm-7am once last week, but since then she has been waking up around 4 and I am not sure why. She's not really hungry, doesn't seem cold or hot and doesn't have a poopy diaper. I have been bringing her to bed with me and there she'll sleep with the pacifier in her mouth until 7am. How do I "teach" her to stay asleep?

Re: Sleeping through the night

  • I don't have any advice for you because C is similar. She sleeps from 8:30 or 9 til 4 or 5 am. Once she wakes up after her long stretch she is basically up every half hour to maybe 1.5 or 2 if we're lucky. After 6:30 she won't go back down for more than 15 or 20 mins unless I bring her to bed with me to snuggle. Then she'll sleep/nurse off and on until sometime between 7:30-8:30. I think it's just that they're still so young, I'm sure as they grow their sleep will become more predictable and they'll be able to stay asleep longer after that first big stretch.

  • Try putting LO to bed earlier. Try it one night and see.

  • Google 4-month sleep regression. We aren't there yet, but apparently this happens between 3-5 months. God help us all.

Sleep regression?!? I don't think our sleep could get any worse.

Actually I'm being unfair to her, DD slept better last night only waking 3 times :-S

  • Are you sure she's actually waking up and needing to be checked? She may be in between sleep cycles and she may go back down on her own. Abbie does this once a night but I only check on her if she starts to cry out, not just making calm awake noises. Sometimes she'll fuss like he needs something, but falls right back asleep.. Try waiting a moment before checking on her to see if its really something she needs.
  • I do wait a little bit before checking on her to see if she catches herself - maybe I need to wait longer...

When do you guys put your babies to bed at night? We start our routine at 10pm and she doesn't fall asleep until 10:45/11. I am afraid that she'll wake up even more often if I put her to bed earlier?!

  • Routine starts at 7 she's down no later than 9:30 (recently closer to 8:30) and out til 4/5 then does a snack on one side and sleeps til 7 and sometimes will go right back down after a full meal. She usually wakes to grunt and shift around 2 but never longer than a minute and falls right back asleep - I hardly ever wake for it anymore.
  • Yhea, pretty sure I hate all of you...

The best I have ever gotten from MJ was a 5 hour stretch from 8pm to 1pm, but the regular is 4 hours at first, then he is up every 2 to 3 hours more often the closer we get to the morning, if I can get him to stay in bed until 7am it is a miracle, usually by 6am he is ready to start the day.

LO was born April 26...  and yes, the myths are true. He used to STTN, more or less. Now, he's up every two hours or so. Wheee! The "good news" is that I'm definitely not alone. I posted on the April 13 board about it this morning.

This is very similar to my LO. She sleeps 4-5 hours at first, then is up about every 2 hours. In the past week or so, DH has started putting her in bed with me when he gets up for work at 6-6:30 and we will get another hour or so of sleep while he gets ready. I absolutely love that sleepy snuggle time with her in bed.

  • Jack goes down 10pm sleeps until 5-530, sometimes 7. Up to eat and then sleeps until 830 sometimes 9. If our schedule works out that I can get him down earlier, say 930, he usually sleeps later before waking up.

I will suggest if its taking 45 mins to put her down she is overtired. Looks for the cues that she is tired before she gets crabby. Spacing out, less active. etc.

  • I don't know if you can teach a baby to sleep really. Or maybe it's that I haven't tried. We put S to bed usually between 8 and 9 and for a couple days last week she was sleeping until 6 or so in the morning. Granted last week was her first week at school so that might have had something to do with since she did get up around 4 over the weekend, but we'll see how it goes this week.

This is us exactly!!! I let him sleep in his swing last night and he went from 10-3:30 but it was a strange day with a BBQ with family.

E is STTN now. He started to at 6 weeks but then reverted at 8 1/2 weeks to waking up between 2:30 and 4am. He did this for about a week or so and then started sleeping 9 hours again, which he has been doing consistently now. Ditto what PP says about making sure she actually is awake and needs to be fed. Sometimes E wakes up and cries out then fidgets and falls back to sleep.

Almost exactly this is my situation as well. Except that my LO started STTN at 4w and sleeps 7 hours, not 9.

  • My LO sleeps about 3 or 4 hours and then 2 hour stretches. She probably wakes 3 times per night.

  • Simon sleeps 7 PM to 2 AM and it is a miracle compared to how my DD slept at the same age. And Sunday night he made it to 5 AM!

  • Jealous! Tyler sleeps from 9-12, then he's hungry at 2, then 4, and then 6.
I guess the plus side is we won't even notice the 4-month sleep regression, right?
