Putting baby back down during night after feeding

During the first nightly feeding E goes right down. Like she eats and is out cold. When she wakes up a second time she eats and is up for 1.5-2 hours after. I rock her, shush her, sing to her, etc. she will fall asleep in my arms then when I go to put her down her eyes pop open and shes up. This feeding starts around 4:40am. nothing I'm doing seems to get her back to sleep any sooner. Anyone have advice?

  • Yup- same here. I usually let her sleep with me after the early morning feeding or we are up for a long time.

  • This rarely happens to me, but i have a whole process. I feed LO 2/3 of what she will eat, burp her, change her diaper, re-swaddle her, let her finish eating, burp her then lay her down. She usually knocks out or at least is halfway there from finishing eating and/or the last burping.

Also i keep as little light on as possible during all of it and try not to talk to her at all, she gets that its still night time.

  • I also do everything by night light during the night. No interaction, either, like others have said (other than some kisses!). I change her diaper, feed, burp, and let her lay on my chest for about 10 minutes. During that time, I play the "clothes dryer" sound on my iPhone. Then I transfer her to the RnP and put the phone close. The sound shuts off after 15 minutes, and we are both back to sleep by then. Good luck!

  • Sometimes this happens.

I've tried to make it a point of holding Lo for 10-15 mins after they fall asleep. It's supposed to be something about their sleep cycle. Good much, because I know it's frustrating!

Yeah I hold her about 10-15 mins after a feeding and she doesn't wake up. :)

  • No advice as this same thing happens to us every night- but will be lurking this thread!! Thanks for posting!

This is what I do and it works 90% of the time. It's hard though, especially when she gives me one of her big, gummy smiles. I just want to smoosh and play with her.

I do this before I switch the baby to the other boob. It works through the night but not for the 5 am feeding. I think she's rested and just wants to be up by that time. My H will put her on his chest, it takes about an hour to get her back to sleep.

Yes, I do all of this exactly!

I agree with this also. She is rested at this time and her eyes are wide open!

This is the feeding we have trouble with. I shouldn't complain bc she sleeps through the night up until that 5 am. And she sleeps most of the day except for eating and little awake spurts. But that 5 am that is her longest awake period. And I am so not a morning person. But I guess I should learn to be and enjoy the sunrise with her. :)

  • Lurking. Great advice in this thread!

  • Something similar happened to us last night around 11pm. LO fell asleep on me three times and as soon as I moved or transferred LO to the crib- LO's eyes popped open each and every time. Fortunately my husband was able to put LO to bed... but this itself took 45 minutes.

  • Oh, I also wanted to add... The heating pad has been a godsend. I turn it on and put it in her bed when I start to feed. I think moving from the warmth of mommy to a cold bed is shocking for them. When I pre-warm it for her, she seems to settle in much easier. Obviously, I remove the heating pad right before I put her in.
