Power Yoga

I love it and did it regularly before I was pregnant.  I am in pretty good shape, generally (run ~30 miles per week).  I have stopped with the yoga since I found out. I'm currently 9-10 weeks.  I'd love to go back and I'm feeling really blobby and soft.  How bad of an idea is this?

Great idea!! I've kept up my practice and now at 33 weeks, I think it's why I have stayed strong, avoided crappy symptoms (water retention, swelling, heartburn, etc.) and feel not scared of labor. Talk to your teachers at the beginning of class. At this point, all you have to avoid are twists and breath retention. As you get farther along your body will tell you what it wasn't want to do anymore.

  • I'm worried about the temperature of the room.  Its not Bikram, but they keep it at ~80 - 85 degrees.  Its definitely hot and I'm soaked with sweat after a 90 minute class.  I can certainly bring lots of cold water and take it easier than I normally would if I feel myself getting too hot.

For the record, my doctor didn't seem concerned, but he's not really concerned about anything and I'm not sure he really focused on the fact that its a very warm room.  He was just like, "oh exercise, keep doing it, it great!"

Talking to the teachers is a great idea, though.  Thanks for your answer!

  • So, I did it last night, but I was such a wimp that I barely did anything.  I took it very easy and whenever I felt a bead of sweat form, I left the room to cool off.  I may need to stick with running, or just do some yoga DVDs in my cool house.
  • Are there any other yoga class you can do that aren't in a warm room? I teach vinyasa yoga at a gym so the room is never very hot and we turn on some fans if it does. It's still a good workout but without the external heat, instead you build your own. :)

  • There are other yoga classes, but the studio I go to only offers the power yoga in the warm room.  I'll have to find another studio for the next 6-7 months, I guess.
