OK, is this joke offensive?

Someone told this joke, and I thought it was funny. I reiterated it to others, and some were offended. Is this an offensive joke, or would you be offended if someone said it to you? If so, can you tell me why? Maybe I'm dense, but I don't get why the people were offended, so can someone enlighten me?

Did those who were offended lose someone to suicide? That is the only thing that I can come up with because only 0.01% of the population has dissociative identity disorder (I googled

).

This joke wouldn't offend me. Admittedly, I am hard to offend, however, this joke seems pretty tame, IMO.

I wasn't offended by it, but I could see how others would be. Insulting people with medical disorders is really not PC.

I wondered that too, but don't know. However, I had a friend commit suicide right after college (that was quite awhile ago now), and I still laughed at this joke. So I guessed that probably wasn't it, but who knows.

I think, in general, it's probably not the best idea to make jokes about mental illness. I don't think I would be offended enough to say something, but I might have been a little taken aback.

I agree not funny at all, but then I don't think mental illness is a joke. I am honestly shocked that you could not see how this joke could be offensive. It is not that hard.

Yes, it is. It mentions both mental illness and suicide. Both things that many people struggle to have others take seriously, and here they are in joke. I find it kind of pathetic that you can't tell why it's offensive.

Thanks to those of you who answered my question honestly! I asked other people as well and several had no idea why that joke was considered offensive, which is why I asked here. But now that you have pointed it out, I can see why others might see it as such. So thanks for the help!

Anything that makes fun of a medical condition is offensive. Whether you're having a laugh at the expense of someone with a mental disorder or cancer, its offensive. I don't judge you for being ignorant about something, but I think it's a sad reality of how mental illness is seen in this country. No one would think twice about finding a joke about cancer offensive but its seemingly a mixed bag here.

It did not offend me at all but I am hard to offend. No one said they found it funny. I agree with Amy the fact that you could not figure out on your own why this is offensive leads me to believe you are not so bright.

Get off your high horse you posted a dumb joke that you thought it was funny no one else did. The majority of posters told you is was obviously offensive and why.

FTR I asked my seventeen year old babysitter what she thought of it and she said it was sad because mental illness is not funny. It is a sad day when teenagers have more sense than a grown adult.

My "high horse"??? I will remind you that you are the one berating my questions and flinging put-downs and personal attacks over it, when I simply asked a sincere question in the first place. Most of the others who told me why it was offensive did not berate me for asking the question. FTR: a few other people here said they chuckled or thought it was a tame joke or didn't understand the offense too, so not everyone reacted the way you did. I just asked the question if anyone thought it was offensive and about specifically WHAT was offensive about it, that is all. You don't need to get your panties in a bunch over it. The fact that you can't answer a sincere question without resorting to personal attacks is really sad. If you can't answer the question without berating the asker, it's probably best you just walk away.
