Pregnant after 35

new to this board & question about cramping

Hi everyone,

I just found out that I was 4-5 weeks pregnant which is great.  This would be my first so I am really clueless about what is normal and what isn't for the first trimester or for that matter any trimester.  I have this cramping going on...it sporadic throughout the day usually once or twice sometimes three times.  There is no bleeding... however last night I did see a very faint color of brownish discharge on the tissue which has since disappeared.  I have read up on cramping and basically have learned that it either could be normal or detrimental to the pregnancy.  When I told my doc about it she said it was normal and to let her know if there was any bleeding.  I don't have an appt. with OB until the end of aug.  so I was wondering if anyone is experiencing or has experienced anything similar to this and how should I handle it.  It feels like heavy menstrual cramps, I get hot and sweaty, and then I feel gassy like burping and what not.  It lasts anywhere from 10 minutes to twenty and then I am fine again.  Some are more severe than others but pretty much the same stuff going on.  Should I be worried about this?

thank you

Kristen

Re: new to this board & question about cramping

  • I can't tell you if you have any issues obviously, but I can tell you that I experienced cramping periodically in first tri. Usually mine hit very early in the morning before I got up and would last 20 minutes to an hour or so. My dr said it was my uterus growing. Also, sometimes gas pains and uterus cramping feel so similar, some of what you are feeling may actually be gas cramps. Your hormones are causing all kinds of havoc right now and gas/bloating is one of the lovely symptoms. I would try to relax and trust your doctor. If you start bleeding and or the cramps get bad that's when I would worry. Oh, and hot flashes are normal too. Welcome to pregnancy! LOL. :)

  • Hi Kristen, I just jumped over here as well from TTC35, I am probably about a week behind you if everything sticks!
I had cramping yesterday, but not as severe as yours.  Mine were actually less severe than menstrual cramps, but similar in location and lasted all day instead of just a few hours.  I also had a bit of spotting or more like pinkish/beige CM.  Was nervous waking up this morning, but all seems OK so far today.
Sorry you are going through the pain, but I just wanted to let know that my googling turned up similar results yesterday.  I think we just have to wait and see, which sucks!

  • Congrats! I actually had some intense cramping early in my 1st trimester (never any spotting, though) and my Dr. said it was perfectly normal. I'm now 25w and all is well! Check with your Dr., but most people say that if your Dr. isn't concerned, you shouldn't be:)
  • Congrats StephV.....lets hope for the best and see what happens....but it sure does suck haha
  • thank you ladies .... it is at least very comforting to know it isn't as uncommon as I thought initially
  • Yep, I've had cramping since I got my BFP over 2 weeks ago. I can't believe it is only 2 weeks, feels like I have known I am pregnant for months :). I'm 6wks 4days. It is sometimes like menstrual cramps other times it is quite intense. RE at our first u/s said it was normal. Congrats!

  • It can be normal but like the other posters have said, let your dr know.

  • Your symptoms sound very normal to me- without bleeding or intense pain chalk it up to you are pregnant!  Happy journey
  • thanks ladies ... this little buggar is causing a lot of havoc in there and its only been a few weeks .... ugh .... I think (and hope) I am in for a long journey
  • Have they subsided at all?  Mine have all but gone away.

  • no not yet.....it is making it really hard to keep it a secret at work because they happen anywhere throughout the day and they basically stop me in my tracks....I cant function til I calm them down....I am wondering if they have something to do with my change in diet (I was on Jenny Craig until I found out I was pregnant) ....This may be TMI but  I am wondering if it has something to do with gas because I burp a lot, toot a lot, and sometimes have to go the bathroom really bad.  Then I feel better.  But how do I prevent it in the first place ??? Luckily I have a fabulous husband who is super supportive.....but dam I feel like there is an alien in my belly trying to torment me!  I have an appt on the 20th for a physical so I am trying to hold off til then.
