Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Newborn Breathing

I am a FTM and my LO has been having some weird breathing patterns. He is a week old. Sometimes he breathes really heavy and rapid. I can see his chest moving really fast up and down. Sometimes he groans too at ends of breaths. Also, he has a high pitched sound he does when he's eating or even just lying there. Anybody else experience this? I am nervous about everything.

Re: Newborn Breathing

  • I am an FTM as well. Babies breathe a lot faster than adults do, something to do with their respiratory systems still developing. I hear the high pitched stuff too...when he is awake I am just assuming he is talking to me...when he is asleep I think its just talking in his sleep or something like air escaping quickly from his closed mouth. But that's all opinion....I haven't researched it or anything. If you are very nervous I would talk to your pediatrician. Hope this helps!

  • Call your pedi if you are worried. It will ease your mind and they will tell you if you should be seen or not.

  • Both of my kids were very loud sleepers as newborns. DS started sleeping in room after a week. DD started immediatly sleeping in her crib. They were soo loud that I couldn't sleep

  • My LO is 2 months and she did this as a newborn. It's very normal. Newborns are still figuring out how to breathe and go in cycles of short/fast breaths and then slowers longer ones- all are NOISY!  Your baby will grow out of it and one day you will notice that he/she breathes more regularly, it's a gradual process.

  • My LO is 3 months and I used to just stare at her bc of this.  My pedi told me it is totally normal.  She then went from that rapid breathing to grunting and that freaked me out (FTM too), but that also was normal and short lived!
