Does this happen to anyone else?

For awhile my hands would go numb and I figured LO was just sitting on a nerve to make it happen. I would roll over or adjust and eventually the numbness and tingling would go away. It's gotten worse the last week. Today it's so bad I couldn't even grip my fork and knife to eat my meals. It's constant pins and needles and sharp pains through my fingers and arms. Anyone else experience this and have advice on how to get some relief?

  • Yes please get it checked out and also note the frequency of the feeling.  They might schedule you for an MRI to be sure.  Good luck!

  • Definitely ask your doctor, I haven't experienced that personally.

  • Sounds like carpal tunnel.  Wearing braces can help, and there's some massage that can help move fluid out of your wrists, but unfortunately the only thing I found that really helps is having the baby!

  • Oh geez. This has been a pretty "easy" pregnancy and now I am worried.  I will be contacting my doctor for sure in the AM

  • This is happening to me, but not quite as dramatic.  My fingers and hands feel like a weak arthritic 85 year old woman's.  It's hard to open jars and things like that.  They're also quite a bit swollen.

They don't get pins and needles when I'm up and about but it's hard to find a way to lay at night on my side where they don't start going numb and tingly pretty quickly - it's just been getting worse the farther along I am getting!  Also, I do have the carpal tunnel pain stuff, too.

I did talk to my doctor last appointment and she felt it was normal.  I would talk to your doctor, hopefully it's just a little more severe version of what's happening to me and no big deal!

  • Oh, I have a very different opinion. My hands go numb a lot more at the end of both of my pregnancies. For me, it's positioning and posture related. If your shoulders or neck are pulled a little more forward than usual then you can get nerve impingement (under you clavicle, under some neck muscles, and in your armpit are common sites of nerve compression). We don't have a ton of room for error in these locations, so when I am bigger or have any swelling then it happens. I get increased swelling in my armpits during pregnancy from changes in breast tissue and increased blood volume. If you can relieve the symptoms by changing activities or position then I wouldn't be too alarmed.

Sounds like carpal tunnel to me. It's a common pregnancy thing, and like PP said, wrist braces at night can help. Def let your doctor know, but I don't think it warrants a special call to them.

Oh also, carpal tunnel is very specific and it doesn't sound like that at all, just nerve impingement higher up most likely in the shoulder area.

ETA - I said it didn't sound like carpal tunnel because you said the symptoms are also in your arms, nerve damage from carpal tunnel usually has to be pretty severe to get the symptoms between your wrist and elbow.
  • I've been dealing with pain/tingling but has been much better with wrist braces. The tingling is usually attributed to me laying on one side all night.

  • Yes.  My OB said it was carpal tunnel which apparently is pretty common in pregnancy.  Braces at night have helped.  Also trying to keep my arms straight whenever possible, which mostly only happens when sleeping or when I first start getting the tingling feeling.  Definitely let your OB know whats going on.  Hope it improves for you.

  • Try a chiropractor! My chiro has been my best friend this pregnancy. My joints get super relaxed and pinch all sorts of nerves. Seriously, try it...with all the relaxin in your system it might just pop back out again, but its worth a shot for some relief.
  • I've been going to a chiropractor on a monthly basis for some pre pregnancy back issues and I have found that it does help with the back pain.

I have an appointment with my doctor in an hour so hopefully I will get some answers and help with this pain.
