Celiac disease

Does anyone have a little one with celiac disease? My daughter was said to have failure to thrive at 9 months... She will be 1 in a week and is 26.5inches and just reached 13lbs this weekend (born at 7lbs 6oz). I've been reading up on celiac as my sister in law has it, and am wondering if anyone is going through this? She does not have diarrhea, the opposite, she is severely constipated and needs laxatives daily to have a bowel movement. She is a very clingy baby and spends a lot of time whining and her stomach seems pretty bloated after any meal. Any thoughts or personal experiences with getting little one tested or what symptoms they had?

Re: Celiac disease

  • I don't have any knowledge of babies and celiac disease but wanted to say I'm sorry you and baby are dealing with that. It sounds dreadful :(

This. My friend's son was tested automatically because he was only in the 3rd percentile, but it came back fine. I would ask for a test, I believe it's just a blood test.

  • I don't have any good advice either but I'm sorry you're both going through this. Have there been tests for gastrointestinal issues?

  • Awe thanks for your kind thoughts. I'm not sure about any testing for GI issues...I know as a little one I had issues with digestion and was not able to break down milk or sugars (not sure of specifics) and i was also less than 13lbs at a year so I'm holding off on introducing milk until we speak to the doctor.
  • My little guy is ftt. He was tested for celiac disease at 8 months, but it was negative. From what I have read, there are a lot of false negatives in babies. We recently eliminated all dairy from his diet (yogurt, cheese, and anything containing dairy/milk protein). He had a growth spurt after we did that, but he lost a little at his last weight check. I still haven't completely ruled out celiac disease.

  • I do not have Celiac but my mom and brother do and I've been very, very aware of introducing wheat for this reason.

In order to test positive for Celiac via blood test there needs to be prolonged exposure to wheat - enough to basically damage the gut and turn "on" the disease. That is not to say there can and will not be signs or distress before then. What you are describing does sound like symptoms but it could also be gluten sensitivity.

Often those with Celiac or gluten sensitivity are also allergic to caesin or the protein found in cow's milk which is easy to confuse with lactose intolerance.

Have you seen a gastrointerilogist? Even if a blood test were to be positive an endoscopy is usually the only way to get complete answers. Good luck, it is so hard to figure this stuff out!
  • I have no advice either.  My BIL has celiac so I some exposure to the disease. I hope you find the answers you need.

  • No advice, but
    >:D<

What has the pedi said so far? Surely they would have sent you to a GI before now. Does she not eat a lot? Does she spit up a lot? Or is she just not processing it?
  • I'm sorry you're going through this. I dont have experience with celiac disease. We have had lots of gi issues, and seeing a pediatric gi and dietitian has been helpful. Have you seen a specialist?
