Bad staining in diapers?

I've only been using CDs full time for about 1.5 weeks now and already the insides of them are SO stained. Is it normal for breastmilk poop to stain so soon? I've heard of people saying to lay diapers out in the sun, but is there anything else I can do to manage the stains? I have prefolds and pockets.

  • Yup, EBF poo stains crazy mustard yellow. It's normal and it doesn't mean your diapers aren't clean.

Drying them in the sun really will make them look brand new.

  • Yes it is normal and the sun is best. I have hung mine out to dry and the sun has cleared the stains before the dipe was dry. And sunshine is free.

  • Will the sun still help if I've already put the stained diapers through the dryer before? Or is it like getting ink on clothing and once it's dried, it's set in and stained for good?

  • You can sun them anytime. It works best when they are wet, though. Some people also recommend lemon juice to help get the stains out in the sun. They need to be washed again after the lemon juice.

  • It's always funny to me how everyone who asks about stains is like "I hear the sun works, but what else can I do?"

What's so bad about the sun? Try it with one. If you're not happy, don't do it again. But I promise, it works. Plus the sun kills germs. And stuff.

Sunning even in a cloudy climate works. I read a post (drawing a blank in what blog) recently where she "sunned" diapers on a cloudy/rainy day and it still worked. It took all day, but it worked.

  • Yup. PPs are right, it's absolutely going to happen with nb poo, and the sun will take care of it. The first time I sunned diapers, I told my DH (a nurse) that I read about the sun taking care of stains. He responded with the science of why it works... Basically, the sun breaks down the bile from the poo, eliminating the stains.

  • @goblu1274 that should work during the winter. They just need uv light.

While we are on the subject of sunning the stains out...my concern is during the winter months.  I have a sunroom that is all windows with clear glass (no UV protection).  I was thinking I would hang them on a drying rack in there during the winter.  Would it work?  If not, what do you do in the winter if you live in a cold climate?
I bet it would work. Pre-baby I lived in Edmonton, Alberta for a couple of winters and the sun bleached out my couch and a good chunk of my nicest rug. Winter there lasts pretty much from October through May.
  • Love the sun.  It has saved some of my best diapers from looking pretty beat up.  Especially now that we are in the solid poop phase.  Not to mention, I love the fresh air smell they get after being outside.

  • I'm too lazy to sun my diapers. The stains all seem to come out in subsequent washes. My diapers aren't necessarily super-white-like-new, but they don't look any worse than any other clothing that has been through the wash numerous times.
