Family outing fail!

Before A, S & I went to the farmer's market & a bakery almost every Saturday. So today, we decided to try it as a family of four.

Here's what went well with our trip: weather. no potty accidents. time together as family.

Here's what went not so well: Late start, after friends drop by unexpectedly. Water bottle filled, but left on the counter at home. Wipes from diaper bag left in bathroom at home. Stroller turns out not to accommodate carseat very well and be really difficult to reconfigure. DH frustrated. Bakery we usually frequent closed. Alternative coffee shop has awful coffee, and mediocre, overpriced pastries. Tops of milk bottles not so tight, spill milk all over stroller. Whole trip takes about 5x longer than expected, and so go out to lunch and get home past regular lunch and naptimes...and everybody - especially mom and dad are exhausted!

Tell me it gets easier, those of you with 2 kids!

  • Oh yea, it definitely gets easier with time and practice.  I always forgot something at home while out with the boys but I learned to get the diaper bag ready the night before and double check everything (mental check list) before we left the house.  I always get myself and the boys ready a lot earlier than needed because it ALWAYS takes a million times longer to leave the house.

And, hey, just focus on the good stuff!  You guys actually got out of the house and (hopefully lol) had fun!  Pretty soon this outing will be a memory and something to laugh at :)

  • Thanks for the reassurance.
And @watermellens - nope, Troy. Know any good bakeries there? pm if so.

  • It does get easier. I leave wipes and 2 diapers for each kid in the car, an 'emergency' kit (2 receiving blankets, a onesie for D and shorts for T, etc.) in case of a clothing catastrophe and literally have a basics checklist on the fridge. I can look at it and do a mental check each time we go to leave the house. Try again next week, it'll be better!!!

  • I think it gets better. Like pp I do keep a backup outfit for both kiddos and diaper for J in the car. Things got easier but now with 2 active kiddos it's got it's new set of challenges so I rarely go shopping with both anymore by myself since 1) any long trips result in epic meltdowns or tantrums and I forget half of what I needed to buy 2) they are kinda crazy and A won't sit in the cart and J has discovered how to get his feet underneath him to try and stand in the carts. But play dates or kid centered activities? Definitely get easier as #2 gets older and I got more practice getting all 3 of us ready to go.

It gets WAY easier! (although I did the exact same thing with filling up a water bottle & leaving it on the counter today! lol) You just have to adjust to a new routine. Expect things to take at least 2xs longer than before, since there are 2 kids now. Keep practicing with small outings & you will get the hang of it.
