Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Problematic Symptoms post D & C

Hoping someone can help me with what to expect. I had a D & C yesterday after a MMC discovered at 10 weeks 5 days. I expected cramping and bleeding but am so confused by what my symptoms really are. First of all, I have had almost zero bleeding. I've had a considerable amount of cramping initially, but it has sort of given way to an overall aching sensation in my pelvic area. I also feel a very uncomfortable amount of "stretching" internally, I'm assuming this was from the dilation. But my biggest complaint is the bloating and constipation. I weighed myself tonight and I am up 9 pounds since Wednesday, and I know it's not from eating because I was vomiting all day yesterday. What can I do about the bloating and constipation? Everything about this is just awful and I am so inspired by those of you who are sharing your stories. It's all that has helped me keep moving.

Re: Problematic Symptoms post D & C

  • The 'nice' thing about the d&c is the clean-ness of it.--neat, tidy, done in 15 minutes. When was yours? light bleeding and some tnederness was what I had for about a week. a couple of tylenol a day took care of pain and I gave myself some extra time to rest and recover from everything (physical and emotional).

I had slight bleeding on the day of--enough to change a pad. Then, nothing for a day or two and some blood when I wipe. According to my notes for the first one, it stopped about a week later.

What kind of drugs have you had? narcotics? (codeine, etc) those will back you up faster than hair in a drain. With the pregnancy, I had huge constipation issues and actually knew that something was wrong when I had two days of not being constipated. The normal fiber/water will be the advice most people give you, but if you're having pains, I'd get some miralax. it was a lifesaver. my stomach was hard and it help aleivate it. you could also try colase or a stool softener.

As for the vomitting---was it due to a reaction to something? If the constipation is that bad, you *could* have a blockage of some sort, but I don't know your situation. (sorry..not trying to scare you..it just depends on how long constipation has been ongoing and why you were sick).

  • I'm sry that i don't have experience to share for a d&c, but i did have a lot of pelvic/uterine pain a few days after delivering. My doc attributed this to my uterus shrinking. Maybe it's a combination of both? Also, i had a lot of constipation during pregnancy and after delivery. I took a stool softener. It did wonders.

If your pain is bad, dont be shy about asking for something to help with the pain, or something stronger if what you have isn't working.

I hope this gets better for you soon. ((Hugs)) so sorry for your loss.

  • I also had some discomfort (as opposed to pain), a couple days after my d&c, and had chalked it up to post-op issues, but it was constipation. I was so bloated I was afraid somebody was going to ask if I was pregnant. For me, I just had to "get things moving" after doing not too much after the surgery. I went for a good long walk, and watched what I ate. That was enough for me to do the trick, although I know not for some women.

  • All in all, I think your symptoms are pretty common after a D&C.  My bleeding didn't pick up for about a day and a half, then it was a period-like flow (I'm 10 days out and still having some on and off bleeding).  Cramping and being sore is really normal.

You don't hear about bloating and constipation as much, but they are symptoms as well.  I had both.  Metamucil was my best friend after my D&C.

  • I also wanted to add that I'm not sure about the vomiting, though.  Was that before or after your D&C?  If after, that might be something to ask your doctor about b/c it can signify infection.  Are you running a fever at all?

  • My discharge instructions said to notify my doctor if I had persistent nausea and/or vomiting.  You might want to call if you are still sick.  Sorry that you are dealing with being sick, recovering from a d&c and grieving your loss.  I am 10 days out from my d&e and each day gets better.  Hang in there!
  • These symptoms seem pretty common after D&C.  I was taking Fiber gummies, but it wasn't until I drank A LOT of water that the constipation went away.  It took a week or 2 for the bloating to start to go down for me.  What pain meds are you taking?  Sometimes those can cause vomiting.  Sorry you are dealing with this.  Hope you feel better soon

  • What you describe sounds pretty normal for a d and c. I, too, had almost no bleeding after the surgery. Just some spotting and a rogue clot every few days for the first week or so. I had brown creamy discharge for a week to ten days after that.

As for the cramping or stretching, I had some immediately after surgery but think it was attributable in part to the catheter they inserted during surgery. I had more two weeks later and my ob thinks it was O pain - makes sense as AF showed almost 2 weeks later exactly. So, maybe that's what you are experiencing now??

I'm sorry you find yourself here. I hope you are feeling better soon.
