My DS is almost two so it has been a while since i had a newborn..so I was just wondering what are some of the baby products or devices that you moms couldn't live without and would recommend?

Re: Baby items you couldn't live without?

  • My rock n play. Only way I got any sleep or showers in the first couple months. Also swaddles. I really liked the summer infant brand with velcro

  • I LOVVVEEDD our kickpad, it had dangly things and a piano keyboard at the end. Our son loved it from birth, he would still probably play with it but I put it up once he started rolling...so many days it was the only thing that would distract him while I took a shower or just took a break. I'd put it in his pack and play and let him go to town.
  • Early days it was a Moby and my glider (spent lots of time there!)
Turbo loved his swing when he was a baby, so that's another big one!

We also went through onesies and burp cloths like MAD. :)

  • I thought it was stupid at first, but I felt it helped in the winter months and for really poopy diapers...the wipes warmer! Maybe it's just in my head, but it seemed the warm wipes cleaned better. Also, my Patemm folding changing pad. It is larger and more cushioned than the ones that you get with the diaper bag, so for me, it's better for when you are changing the baby in public on the bathroom changing tables. It's pricey, but well worth it to me :)

  • My DD loved the swaddle me, and the Boppy pillow was amazing for nursing, and we also used it for tummy time, and to prop her up when she started to sit but was still wobbly.
  • My boppy was my life saver and I used it for SO many different types of things. I am definitely getting another.
  • Ergo baby. Awesome DH. :)

  • 1. Rock n Play/Bouncer...just some place to put baby while they are sleeping so you can get something done.
    2. Good burp clothes.
    3. Bobby..we used it for nursing, naps, tummy time, a neck pillow in the middle of the night
    4. Pack n Play with bassinet feature...LO slept in our room for the first 5 months and still sneaks in there some nights so having the PnP is super nice.

My LO HATED being swaddled so we ditched that very early but swaddle blankets if you have a baby who likes being swaddled.

  • Breast pump.  Bottles. Receiving blankets.  Washcloths (used them to wipe burps and for baths). FREEZER MEALS (ie stock your freezer while pregnant so you dont have to cook when baby comes- this was my biggest saving grace lol). Other than that, pretty low maintenance for us.  Didnt use a swing, we have a bouncer and a rocker, whatever, one will do, dont need both.  Got too many stuffed animals.  Never used a bottle warmer or wipe warmer.  Oh the baby bathtub was great!  just a toddler tub with a newborn insert.

  • The papasan swing was magical for both my daughters.

  • Nursing pillow, glider and woombie. Later it was the swing lol

  • Ditto the RocknPlay, it was an absolute life saver (we didn't have one until LO was about 3 weeks and it made a huge difference).  Also a white noise machine, a carrier (we went through several trying to find one we both liked- a Mei Tei was the best for us), a swing, and a stroller (my LO can stroll for hours, he is so happy when he's getting pushed around).

  • Thanks for all your comments ladies! I'm definitely adding a lot of these to my shopping list!
  • Boppy pillow. I could breast feed and read or play video games at the same time! Definitely getting another one.

Bumbo. It made feedings so much easier when he finally started baby food. Although, he did try to flip out of it a few times. Gotta keep an eye on baby with this.

Car. 3 am rolls around and nothing will get LO back to sleep? Go for a drive. Totally saved my life.

Scout. A stuffed dog toy that says your LO's name, favorite color, food, animal, etc. You can even choose a few songs and lullabies it plays. DS has been attached to his since the moment I got it for him. It is his security for him and he still will not sleep without it.

  • Follow-up to all of these.  Do we need a swing, bouncer, AND a rock N play?  It seems excessive (especially since we are having 2!) Unsure about the Rock N Play just because of the recall ... but would still be open to it :)  Just seems overwhelming buying 2 of everything ...

  • You shouldn't need to buy two of everything. My parents were foster parents and we had multiple sets of newborn/infant twins stay with us, more often than not, what makes one twin happy doesn't work for the other twin. One baby may absolutely love the swing where the other may hate it, etc. I can speak for wanting both the bouncer and the swing as they were lifesavers (aka mommy sleep savers!) for my daughter, but I don't know enough about the RNP to give an opinion. You also may want to check out second hand stores or Craigslist since these are items that are only used for a few months you can generally find them in great shape with much smaller price tags :D
