Dads & Dads-to-be

5 Thing Thursday

Frankly, this week... I've got nothing.  It is a 5 Thing Thursday free for all.

Re: 5 Thing Thursday

  • 1) Had one of those days that I had envisioned when my wife first told me I was going to be a dad yesterday.  Took the boys to the Children's Museum and my oldest was by far the most interactive and inquisitive that he's been to date, I could see him just soaking it in.  We had a really good time there.  After his nap and dinner, we turned on a movie and he cuddled up next to me and we watched the movie together while my wife had our youngest cuddled up with her.  Just a really good day.

    2) I don't know how I'm going to pull off the rest of the year financially.  I have to foot the expense of a weekend trip to Raliegh, NC for my wife's 1st cousin's wedding.... hotel, travel, food, all of it with my spare check this month. It is not an option to not attend by her family's standards.  It sounds like we are throwing a baby shower for her best friend, so we've got to come up with cash for that.  Then we have my son's birthday party one week before Christmas, and then Christmas itself (we have 13 adults and 5 kids we HAVE to buy for, not to mention our own 2 boys).  I'm sure we'll make it work, but right now it just seems very challenging.

    3) Toddlers are destructive.  Jeffrey, my oldest, has broken multiple toys in the last week or so.  Not tragically broken, but little pieces breaking off.  I'm going to have to invest in the stock of whomever makes Super Glue.

    4)  I think I'm starting to warm to the board changes the Bump has done... though I still don't care for the extra steps to navigate from board to board.

    5)  Is it January 2015 yet?  We are taking the kids to Disney World then, and it is something I'm just really, really looking forward to doing.

I think it's best that we stay on our own board anyways.  It's scary out there.

  • 1.  The little guy was moving like crazy last night.  I finally saw a foot through her stomach which was pretty weird.  DW is going on 35 weeks now so we are almost one month away now!

    2.  My friends keep asking me to to go to concerts with them in October-December.  I have to keep reminding them that I have no idea what things will be like once the baby is here so I have to decline.

    3.  We went to our second to last Hypnobirthing class last night and I feel like my wife has a pretty good handle on the process.  I just hope I am ready to assist her throughout L&D since I am supposed to be a pretty active participant.

    4.  My Tigers are looking pretty good recently.  Two series sweeps and some good acquisitions.  It's too bad Jhonny Peralta will most likely be suspended today for PED use.  He's had a hell of a season...probably due to PED use.

    5.  It's cooled down a lot within the last week and I am gearing up for fall.  Horror movies, Halloween, cider and donuts, and the birth of my son of course.  I'm fucking ready!

  • 1) There need to be more great Sci-Fi Comedy movies like Ghostbusters, Back to the Future and Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Even Short Circuit was rad.

    2) Seriously, where is my servant robot? Minimally I don't understand why we don't have a beer robot yet.

    3) It's amazing how much my feelings about life have improved since my wife got a job and is working part time. It's nice to be paying down the debts we slowly piled up when she was a full time stay-at-home mom.

    4) It's heartbreaking when my son cries and tries to stop me from leaving in the mornings when I go and leave him with the sitter. He loves his sitter, but does not like not having his parents around all day. At the same time, it kind of sucks being his second choice parent... if my wife is around, he often doesn't care about me at all.

    5) I guess I'm braver than you dudes about playing on other boards. Or just more bored at work?

I say talk with your wife and pick one concert to go to. That will be your scheduled, planned night off.

I simply find that I am a thread-killer on other boards.

Most definitely.  Right now there is so much unknown that I would hate to make plans, purchase tickets, and then have to back out.  I think I will wait to see how things are going after the first month.

  • 1) I'm glad to finally be home from work. Long day. Finally getting a poop in. 2) My son amazes me every day. Seriously, there is nothing more gratifying than his excitement when he sees me after work. 3) I watched the MLB trade deadline yesterday for any big moves. A very uneventful day. Hopefully the Braves can hold steady these next few months. 4) I won Avenge Sevenfold/Deftone tickets on the radio today. 5) I thought about starting a movie trivia thread on this board. Where you guess the movie from the image. Not sure how you other dads feel about it?

Congrats on the tickets!  I haven't seen Deftones since 2000, they put on a great show.

    I'm down for trivia.

    Yay Poop!

The only reason I know Avenged Sevenfold is because of Beast and the Harlot off Guitar Hero.

The Padres actually picked up Ian Kennedy from the DBacks, which I think may have been the biggest move. It was weird for me seeing guys that used to be total Fantasy Studs now old and being traded by their teams for spare parts.

I like trivia, although the google makes good trivia tougher.

  • 1) My main boss told me that him and my senior engineer are going to have to shift more responsibilities down stream.  I am third in line and have only been working for my company for three years versus the 15 and 17 years that they have.

    2) On a positive note we hired two more engineers for my department.  The bad thing is the one has to go back to Toledo for 9 months to finish her degree.  The other was our temp who we have been training for a year.

    3) My kid has gotten to the stage that when he wants you he will drag you to where he wants you.

    4) Our last game night, our heroes got dropped in the middle of huge war and we are missing some of our players.  Next game night everyone has to be there and fully attentive so that means have a babysitter at home for our son.

    5) Did the HOF 2 mile walk and I still don't know who is playing in the HOF game that should be happening this weekend.  I also drive by the Football HOF every day going to and from work.

  • 1. My wife is 6 months pregnant and we're having a girl - extremely psyched and anxious!
    2. Spartan Sprint next Saturday AND Jay Z / Timberlake at Fenway. Huge day.
    3. Purchased our first stash of diapers today - "get em' when there on sale" is common advice it     seems.
    4. Sick of my job, holding on until after the baby arrives and then getting on the hunt.
    5. Muay Thai class today, really considering signing up!

Not a bad idea, but beware... one brand of diapers may work better for your daughter than another, for whatever reason.  We tried Huggies (shower gift) and they didn't work well for us at all, but Pampers worked like a charm.
  • I agree with Coltsdad, my sister bought us a large variety of diapers of different sizes so we can figure out which one we like the most.  We found out that Huggies works the best.

    What game?

Usually if too many players were missing we'd run a side quest of sorts, that of course had unreasonably high rewards to benefit those who bothered to show up.

  • We play AD&D 2nd ed using a third ed script from Dragon magazine ( it is the worms campaign if you get Dragon magazine).  My friends that host this are huge gamers of all types and she grew up playing D&D with her father who has played with the creators of the game.

At times we do side quests if some of the key players are not there but last time they continued without my character even though I am the tank and have to powerful henchmen that are our other tanks, they had our illusionist instead though and it was more of minor battle that our thief could handle along with our magic user/bard/fighter elf.
