Cloth Diapering

considering OS cloth pocket diapers

Hey Gals,

I am only 12 weeks pregnant (with my first) and have been doing a lot of research on cloth diapering. I am pretty much sold and am now trying to convince hubs that it is the right choice, not only for the environment but for baby too. Also, CD's are so stinkin cute!!! I am trying to sell him on the fact of how much $$$ it will save us in the long run. I think I really like the FuzziBunz pocket diapers and was considering a stash of 24+ One Size Elite Cloth Diapers. They "say" they fit from birth to potty training. However, I have read conflicting things on one size diapers, some say that they do not really fit newborns and you need a separate newborn stash, which for me means an addition 24 diapers since I do not want to have to wash diapers every single day. This would double the cost and would be a less convincing argument for DH if we had to spend $800+ vs $400+. I was wondering if the FuzziBunz brand or a different brand of One Size diapers actually do fit newborns who are 6-8lbs (no idea how big or small my baby will be). I would hate to not have diapers that fit our little one if the one sizes are too big for a while, and would equally hate to spend so much extra money on newborn diapers if the one sizes will fit. Any advice is greatly appreciated :)

Re: considering OS cloth pocket diapers

  • Have you considered prefolds and covers for the first month, or however long it takes to fit into the OS? You can do that for pretty darn cheap. Only need 24 prefolds and 4-6 covers.

Second, while FuzziBunz were definitely the OS diapers that fit our DS earliest, I don't think they would fit an itty bitty newborn. This doesn't necessarily mean that you need to double your investment. In our experience, pockets/AIOs didn't work for the newborn phase. The diapers fit DS great, but he peed out of them every single time. We actually really loved prefolds and covers for a newborn (even though we rarely use them now, and I absolutely prefer pockets and AI2s). You can get an entire newborn prefold/cover stash for under $100.

Another thought... I know you didn't ask about this, but I'm going to toss it out there anyway. You may not want to buy an entire stash of one type of diaper. I was so sure that I would love BumGenius, and I actually wound up really disliking them. It can be really helpful to start with a few different kinds of diapers to figure out what you like.

  • I agree with PPs.  Covers and prefolds are awesome for the NB stage, and very economical.  You can get a dozen good quality ones for around $20.  So $60 for 36 which would very comfortably handle all the NB poo and allow you to wash every other day.  If you use a Snappi on those prefolds to contain the poo better you'd only need around 3-4 covers per day so 6-8 total covers at around $10-$15.  Under $200 and you'd be set for around the first 6 weeks.  After that you can use the prefolds to add absorbency to your OS diapers and sell the covers or save for future babies. The other economical option is to do a diaper rental.  Several websites will rent NB pockets, fitteds, or all-in-ones for 1-3 months.

After that FB one-sized are good diapers, but they don't fit all babies the same.  So as PP said, it's really a good idea to get one or two of maybe four different brands/styles to try.  Then sell what you don't like and buy more of what you do.  Also keep in mind that what fits well when baby is 12lbs may not fit as well when baby is 25lbs.  I really love my Rumparooz pocket diapers, but I can tell already (LO is 20lbs) that they won't fit all the way to potty training for us.

One other thing to consider is a sized system.  AppleCheeks size 1s will fit around 6-7 pounds up to 18-20lbs.  Kawaii Pure & Naturals will also fit around those sizes.  Then you can get the bigger sizes or try OS diapers when baby outgrows those.

  • You might want to consider a cloth diaper rental also - kissed by the moon has a nb rental (I actually loved the fuzzibunz size 0 or 1 or whatever their smallest is). Agree with PPs that you might want to reconsider buying your entire OS stash before LO arrives. I was sure I'd have a big fat baby and he is actually very long and skinny - glad I didn't buy everything up front because I had to find some different brands than what I was planning to try. Also - $800 for a stash is still a lot less than you will spend on sposies ;)

  • If you have multiple children, the savings really add up since you will already have your stash. Also, you can sell off some of your used diapers when you are done so that will help with the cost. Depending on where you live, condition of the diaper, and brand of the diaper, you can make some pretty good money off them. I know where I live on craiglist if I ever see cloth diapers it is almost worth it to spend a few more bucks and buy new because everything used baby is just way too high.

  • I found SoftBums one size AI2/pockets fit my LO from the start. The leg gussets adjust which makes the diaper go pretty darn small. My LO is skinny and I had no leak problems what so ever. Worth looking into if you want to have a variety in your stash or don't want to buy a newborn stash like me. GL!
  • One size diapers will most likely not work on a newborn.

Going with prefolds and covers is a great economical route. We bought a full newborn stash of AIOs and pockets and it worked out great for us. Simplex nb were our favorite by far. We also plan on using this stash for multiple children.

I agree with PP to not buy all of one brand diaper. I really liked the look and idea of FB but they aren't my favorite.

  • Just weighing in as a newbie. LO coming next month! After lurking in here and having my questions answered by all the wonderful mamas on this forum, I've decided on:

Only snap covers, no aplix/hook and loop
    A dozen osocozy unbleached prefolds
A dozen osocozy better fit prefolds
    A pack of snappis
About 4 covers each of Thirsties and blueberry
4 best bottoms with various inserts: standard stay dry, cotton hemp, and bamboo. These covers can also be used with the prefolds
12 bumgenius 4.0s, pockets, that I just got yesterday used on Craigslist, for less than the price of what it would have cost me for 4
    4 Flip covers with inserts

After seeing what works best for baby, and myself and DH, we'll build our stash so we have at least over a dozen of whatever we decide. Probably will stick to 2 or 3 different types, depending on home use, going out, weekend trips, baby anatomy, wetting patterns, etc.

Also, getting a bunch of planet wise wet bags. And I'm trying Charlie's Soap for detergent, and coconut oil andor CJ's BUTTer for baby's butt only if needed. Hope this helps!

Also still expecting LO but from what I've read it's a good idea to have a few nb sized covers and prefolds for the first bit of time. I've bought a few nb covers and registered for a ton of prefolds. But I also have 32 pockets (varying brands) and a few OS covers (flips and a few varying brands as well.)

ETA: I only spent 30$ on my NB covers so far. Keep an eye out for sales and such. Also, I bought a ton of my stash off of Craigslist and Ebay. I don't think I've paid "full price" for a CD yet.

My dd is very tiny. I did not buy a nb stash, just planned to use sposies until the OS dipes fit. Started using them at 3 months and they were still really big on her and we had lots of leaks for a while. If I could do it over I would have purchased a nb stash for sure, prefolds and covers most likely but I also love the idea of Kawaii pure and naturals (we use almost all Kawaii for our OS stash).
