Umbilical Granuloma?

So it looks like DS has an umbilical granuloma.  When the stump was starting to come off it looked very "unhealed" underneath and I worried about infection.  Took him to the Pedi at 1 week old and the nurse practitioner (our pedi was out) said it could be an umbilical granuloma, and that when the stump fell off to put rubbing alcohol on the oozing and they would look at it at his 2 week check up.  The next day it fell off, and from what I've looked at it definitely seems to be a granuloma.

Our 2 week apt is Monday.  Just wondering if anyone has dealt with this and what treatment option did your pedi do?  It sounds like silver nitrate is most common, but sounds like there are others too.

Also, did the belly button look "normal" after it was treated and healed? DH seems to be concerned that his boy is going to have a weird BB.

Re: Umbilical Granuloma?

  • Silver nitrate is easy to do. It's painless and takes about 10 seconds. Sometimes it requires a second wipe, but that's it! Belly button should end up looking normal!

yup- I actually had no idea that it was even a problem- but at her two week check up, the pedi put some silver nitrate on it and it was completely fine. Three years later, you'd never know! Honestly, three days later you'd never know!
  • We had this too. He used the silver nitrate and it took a couple weeks for things to heal up and look normal.

We just dealt with this as well. DS is 8 wks. They actually used suture thread and tied it off close to the connecting tissue (almost how they tied off belly button initially). This cut off the blood supply and it fell off the next day like his cord had earlier. Now his belly button looks just fine and is healed perfectly.

I think they did that as opposed to nitrate just because it took one appt (less than 5 mins) vs multiple applications of the nitrate.
  • DS1 had a granuloma that was treated w silver nitrate. It's perfectly normal looking now at 3yo.

DS2 also had one. We were vigilant about wiping w hydrogen peroxide and it went away on it's own, no silver nitrate.

  • Mine had one, it was no big deal. Ped swabbed it with the silver nitrate, it was gone within a couple of days. This was around 2 weeks, and he's just over two months now with a perfectly normal looking little belly button!
