Resume Help!

I don't post often, but I am hoping you all will help a lurker out!
I am helping my sister update her resume and we are in disagreement over something and I'm hoping you all can shed some light!
How far back do you list your employment (assuming it is all pertinent to the field you are applying to)?  All the way back to graduation/beginning of your work experience or just the most recent/most valuable 2 or 3 jobs?  (assuming for now that you have been in the work force for 10+ years and jumped jobs a lot at the beginning of your work experience)

TIA

Re: Resume Help!

  • If she graduated 10+ years ago, I would just list the last 2-3 jobs as long as she has some years of history at those jobs IE more then 1 year.   It shows work history and she can always list the other jobs and their dates in a Other Related Work History section

  • I would list all of it. Maybe this is field specific, but I think that if you have enough experience then it just warrants using an extra 1/2 page if needed.

  • I think it totally depends on the length of the resume.  1 page great, 2 pages fine.  1 1/2 pages or 3+ pages not so great.  So it really depends on how much room you have, and how much space you are trying to fill

  • I would list all pertinent/longer term projects. I.e. no 2 monthers. Plus pay attention to final formatting look as pp said.

This exactly.  My job entails heavy recruitment presently, and in my opinion, relevance of the position(s) a candidate has held coupled with an indication that he/she can hold down a job for any length of time takes precedence over the actual number of positions.  I'm more interested in how the candidate can relate his/ her skills to the position being offered, and have spent a majority of an interview discussing a single position held by a candidate.  Just my opinion though...
