Switching to Toddler Bed...

Our daughter is almost 19 months and she has tried to climb out of her crib a couple of times now.  We have a convertible crib and it's been on the lowest setting for months.  I am fearful of converting because that means she can get out whenever she wants and what if she decides to play or try to crawl up onto something and hurts herself?  I have the same fear of her trying to climb out of her crib though!?  We will buy furniture anchors to keep those safe and have a video monitor as well.  Should we wait to convert or make the move?  Just feeling anxious about it so any advice is welcomed!!!!

  • I am in the same boat as you.  All of a sudden she is into the climbing stage and I am terrified of hr falling out of the crib. I think I am just going to get the toddler bed ready in the next week or so.  I am going to  super baby proof the room and put a gate in the doorway.  I guess the transition needs to happen at one point or another.  Good luck!

  • My son has been in a big boy bed since his first birthday and he Loves the freedom.  It was nerve-racking at first and a LOT of extra baby proofing had to be done but he does really well with it.  We gave him a tv to make the transition more exciting- I know a lot of parents don't like the idea but our tv is always on and it's just something we do I guess lol.  We keep our bedroom door open and luckily the hallway is small enough for a baby gate so he can't go into any room other than his and ours when he wakes up.
  • We transitioned my son to the toddler bed after he turned 2 years old.  At first, we just introduced the toddler bed, but then he was still sleeping in his crib.  And then it was cold turkey.  I put his little sister in the crib and told him that was her bed now.  And then I put him in the toddler bed.  He did not get it at first, and he would fall out of the bed.  And he would sleep on the floor.  But eventually, he got it.  And he has liked his toddler bed since then.  I got a cute toddler pillow with his name on it from Pottery Barn Kids.

My daughter is in the crib now.  And she is interested in his toddler bed.  But we will transition her after she is 2 years old.  We have a double bed in the same room as our kids, so one of us sleeps on the double bed.  And sometimes my son wants to sleep in the double bed, and he will snuggle with me.

  • My dd is 23 mo. But we just converted. She didn't even bat and eye and never tried to get out of bed. Just take all the toys from her room and baby proof everything. We made a big deal and had DD chose a bed spread... Which really we grabbed two with characters we knew she liked and got we excited. We didn't make a big deal with actually switching the bed itself but did let her climb up and pretend to sleep and gave her some praise for that. We do have a video monitor and that is always peace of mind for us.
    Good luck!
