Christmas on my Mind... What do you plan on getting your toddler?

With all the christmas in July sales that were going on, i started thinking. Who has already started their lists/planning their schedules for Holiday Season? My Girl is going to be 2.5 on december, do you have something you recommend for that age? When do you start normally your holiday shopping? What do you plan if anything to give to non close adults (like a shared secretary, work colleagues, neighbors)? Were can i buy cheap discounted holiday dress for DD (no matter if is older "seasons"? Every year i get delayed and end up with a ton of money spent, but this year we are forseeing to be really tight due that my car broke down and we are buying one now, so i really want to start timely, plan wisely, spend carefully, but also want my family enjoying a rather "normal" christmas.. Any thoughts, recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

  • Clothes at consignment stores, garage sales, or good will-- kind of off topic but I found an awesome Halloween costume at Good Will last year.

I'm planning to make Apple Butter as my generic co-worker gift.

I'm making things for the other children in my family (nieces and nephews, younger siblings, etc.)

DS loves Duplos, little people, wooden blocks, Loving Family doll house right now. he's 2.5. I like to put books in the stocking-- another thing you can sometimes find new looking at consignment stores and garage sales. The Kohls $5.00 - $10.00 coupons you can sometimes get are awesome for small little people sets.

  • I'm interested in the responses. DD is almost 2.5 and I have no idea what to get her for the holidays because she's my second child and we already have a play kitchen and food, ride on toys, dolls, Little People, etc

  • Hanukkah is very early this year--before Thanksgiving actually, so I am already thinking.

Probably a new duplo set, Monsters University Imagenix playset. (she LOVES playsets), some play doh refills, a new thomas the train piece.

I think for Christmas she will either get a train table or a dollhouse.

My daughter has a one track mind for the most part---and things that she is interested in 3+ months ago, she still loves. So I am not worried about her losing interest in the items.

  • My two year old daughter is probably getting a cute chest full of dress-up clothes this year for christmas. Good Will has a large selection of dress-up clothes and places like Toys-R-Us have lots of cheap, fun, costumes. Asking families that have older kids who have grown out of dress-up is also a way to get cheap, cute, dress-up items.
  • I don't normally post on this board, (Usually on my BMB for my 2nd baby due any day), but I decided to pop over and be part of the group!

I have been having a serious problem with this. DS will be 3 next month, and DD (when she arrives) will be about 4 months. DS has more than enough toys, but I'm thinking about donating quite a few of them since he doesn't really play with most of them anymore. Then I can start adding gradually to more age appropriate/toys he'll enjoy more.

He likes books, cars, airplanes, tools, etc etc. I think I'll definitely have to get him some new clothes and some shoes... He's always needing those.

  • We got DD a Leap Pad for her 2nd birthday, it worked out great for keeping her in the stroller when I wanted to go for a run.  At Christmas, 2 years 9 months, we got her a 3 wheeled huffy scooter.  She's very active and really wanted a bike and a scooter, we took her to the store but she couldn't peddle the bike well enough to move, so she got the scooter.  This year we'll go for the bike.  DH also got her one of those little electric cars kids drive from a garage sale, both kids enjoy it.

He's getting a wooden train set from us. I can't really think of any "big" gifts that he doesn't already have and his birthday is in the beginning of February, so I don't like going too crazy for Christmas. Other ideas I have: tool set, dish set, more play food, bristle blocks, Green Toys fire truck, and a small trampoline.

I usually start shopping in November, mostly because I like to avoid the stores in December and I like to actually enjoy the Christmas season instead of worrying about purchasing and wrapping a bunch of presents. However, if I find a great deal on something earlier in the year, I'll certainly pick it up.

I'm not working so no coworkers to think about this year and we don't normally do gifts for neighbors or any other person who isn't a friend a family member. I'll pay my cleaning lady double what I normally do as her Christmas bonus, but that's it as far as adults. We might buy something for my husband's coworkers, probably something edible.

  • I love planning for Christmas! I'm obsessed with everything holiday! However, this year I decided not to shop early because then my kids end up with way to much and my husband misses out on the fun of Christmas shopping because I end up doing it all.
I do have some lists going. DD will be 3 but she is in to the little legos because her older brother has them so I plan on buying some Girlfriend legos for her. She also wants princess dresses so I will probably get those at the Disney store.

  • Much less than we got him last year.  He got way too much and was so overwhelmed.  We plan on getting him a few toys and some clothes.  He got so much from the rest of our family, it was ridiculous.

  • Only 4 months till Christmas...wow! I'm thinking about getting DS another tricycle, other than that I have no idea! Probably some new clothes and books as well. B's grandparents love to shop for him so I have no doubt in my mind that he won't be showered with presents!

  • We are planning on getting our LO Highlights magazine and Nat.Geo for Kids.  MW's mom will most likely go overboard with items for our LO.  My parents tend to get him something small or my mom makes him something for Christmas.

My family doesn't give gifts for the adults since we would rather enjoy our time together.  Her family does drawings for the extended get togethers where her Ohio extended family adults are optional and her PA extended family it is Ohio versus PA.

We spent roughly $500 last year total on all gifts including for our LO.  We tend to shop second hand stores or sales for toys for him and the other children we have to buy for.  We also get most of his clothes from second hand stores such as Once Upon a Child.

  • You can usually find larger toys in pretty good shape on your local Craig's list or a shop like Once Upon a Child.  I bought clothes for all my nieces and nephews last year from Old Navy, they have sales all the time and I think everyone got a shirt for under $8 or something.  I shopped on-line and with free-shipping it was really nice not to have to go to a lot of different stores and mull over options.
For not related adults/coworkers I stick with chocolate.  Usually an assortment of Lindor or Godiva chocolate.
In the fall my city has a lot of weekend consignment sales (once a year sale, not a consignment store).  I found my daughter's dress there last year or just using a regular consignment store.
  • Well DS's birthday is in October, so we have to get over that hump first. Since I'm going broke on his party, there will be no gift.

We do, however take our family Christmas picture at the same time as his annual birthday shoot. Fortunately, someone always gets him a plaid shirt a size too big the Christmas before......

IDK about Christmas. Cruising the toy aisle at Meijer, as my husband always insists, DS freaked out about a Batman Little People set and anything with Angry Birds (which will be his party theme so hopefully he'll get it out of his system).
  • I have a couple of things stored away- a Lego set and some Montessori based toys like a lacing kit. I try to go by the guideline of something you want, something you need, something to learn and something to read for our Xmas gifts.

He is definitely getting a game or 2!
  • I plan on getting her a play kitchen, a Pottery Barn go anywhere chair, and a doll house.  That's all I have thought about so far.
