Acupuncture and chiro (adjustments)

I am considering the idea of acupuncture and having an adjustment done to help with the chances of getting labor going naturally. Anyone have any experiences with either or both of these as far as if it helped you or not? I'd really appreciate hearing about it :)

Re: Acupuncture and chiro (adjustments)

  • I did acupuncture with an adjustment on a Friday (39w6d) and a Saturday (40w) with my first.  Went into labor earlier on Tuesday morning.  Not sure if it put me into labor, but I definitely think it helped to get DD into a good position.  That Friday after my appointment I was laying down to go to sleep and started having this horrible sciatic nerve pain (so bad I thought, "If labor feels like this, I"m getting the epi") and could feel DD moving around a lot.  The next morning I woke up and DD had dropped dramatically, even DH noticed.

It's really relaxing if nothing else and I was surprised to learn that my insurance covered 90%.

  • No experience with acupuncture but I see a chiropractor regularly during all of my pregnancies.  I don't think it necessarily helps to induce labor, but helping to ensure that everything is in alignment will help set the stage for a smoother, faster delivery.

  • I wouldn't do accupuncture (or anything to try and START labor) quite yet considering you're not due for almost two weeks.
Going to a chiropractor would be a great, though, as he/she can do the webster technique with you to be sure baby is head down and in a good position.  I've been going twice a week this whole pregnancy and LO has been in PRIME position for about 3 weeks now.

There's not much you can do to up your chances of going into labor naturally later.  Just be patient and trust your body!  I know how you feel, I'm so incredibly anxious to have this baby.  But I also know it could still be another 3 weeks realistically.

Oh no! I should've specified in my post, I want to wait until around my due date but just trying to get an idea of what may or may not work. Obviously it varies person to person. My husband works for a Chiro And they do acupuncture so I thought it might be something to try and wanted to hear experiences. I know baby is already head down and in really good position so I'm not sure if an adjustment is ideal or not.

That is great. I definitely would like to
Do the acupuncture for some relaxation.

  • I used acupuncture since the first trimester. Your practitioner will not use the "labor" treatment on you until you are ready. They do pre-birth treatments, so it is totally safe to start now & it actually helps the birth session work better. Chiropractic really helps for baby positioning. I recommend them both to many of my patients.

  • I had both acupuncture with moxibustion and chiropractic adjustments to turn my breech baby, and it worked. When I reached 40 weeks, I started getting acupuncture to induce labor and had one adjustment to make sure my pelvis was aligned. It did not induce labor, but it was relaxing.

  • My acupuncturist told me that if it's your first baby and you want to deliver on time you should get it done a couple weeks early. It takes your body time. Definitely took my body time since LO was 2 weeks late!
  • I went to a chiro weekly leading up to the birth of my DS.  And I went in for acupuncture treatment on my due date.  My water broke within 24 hours and I had fairly fast labor (10 hours total) and a natural, uncomplicated birth.

I can't say for certain that the acupuncture did it...but I don't regret getting the treatment one bit and would do it again in a heartbeat.

  • I would do both, if you can afford it. If you see a good chiro and acupuncturist, they won't do anything that your body isn't ready for. I still ended up w Pitocin but I think part of the reason it went so quickly and I was able to avoid the epi is b/c I had done the acupuncture and chiro appointments previously.

I had four false labor starts and was dilated 4cm on my due date with no true labor. My doula was convinced it was a positional and/or pelvic issue and really pushed me to see a chiropractor.

I saw the chiro at 11am. She specializes in prenatal adjustments and the Webster Technique. I went into labor six hours later.

  • Thanks everyone! I am going for acupuncture and a massage tomorrow! If anything, I will love the special treatment :)
