TTC with Femara and Follistem after current pregnancy...how soon?

My DH and I are expecting baby #1 on February 1st. I am 33 years old, and we are wanting to try for #2 as soon as possible.  I have PCOS and got pregnant on Femara and Follistem injections. I do want to breastfeed. I'll be talking to my OB about it at my next appt, but wanted to throw the question out there to anyone who may have some perspective on this? I couldn't find a whole lot about it in my searches.

So basically, how soon after giving birth can one start TTC with those fertility meds? Thanks for your input!

  • You definitely can't take any fertiity meds while BFing. I think you would want to wait at least 6 months until you tried again. Pregnancy and birth are really hard on the body. I wouldn't try to plan yet. If this is your first, you may completely change your mind after LO arrives. I had such a difficult time w my newborn, I wasn't in any sort of place to consider trying again until LO was 8 months. Congrats on your pregnancy.

  • I had to wean before I was able to cycle again. Ours was a FET cycle but from what I understand the rule is pretty typical. We went back to the RE when DS was a year b/c I wanted to BF for the first year. I would say to wait until you actually have LO to worry about deciding to go back. My feelings changed once DS was born. Congratulations on your pregnancy!

  • Keep in mind also the type of birth you may have. I had an emergency c-section and my OB said that he really doesn't want me to get pregnant until LO is 1. I also can't see myself trying until then anyway. Recovering from a c-section is harder then I thought it would be!

  • Thanks, ladies! I did figure I'd have to wait until LO is weaned at least. Good to know about others' experiences. Hadn't considered the ramifications of a C-section. I'm a planner...can't you tell? Lol! Seriously though...I know my risks will increase once I hit 35, so we wanted to plan our family with LO's as close together as possible. :)

  • When ttc#3 I weaned DS2 at 15 mo so I could start treatments at 18 mo PP. I wouldn't want 2u2 so I delayed returning for treatments.

I have pcos a well and my body didn't change after having a baby. Good luck to you

This. Exactly.  I have had surgery 5 times in my life prior to my C-section and it was far and away the most difficult to recover from.  I'm 11 months post op and still feel like I am probably only 90-95 percent recovered. I still have sensitivity in the area. It was probably 6-9 months before I was even 80-90 percent.  I had an u/s about 7 or so months after the C-section and was told it had not healed.  My friend who had a VBAC said that she recovered much faster with the vaginal birth, though, so if you are lucky you may be able to TTC sooner.  However, even with a vaginal birth, I cannot fathom not waiting at least 6 months. An infant is so all-consuming.

  • Even though I have not had a c-section in the past, my friends who have had one said their OB's told them to wait a year before TTC again after the surgery.

After my vaginal deliveries I was told to give my body 6 months to heal.

Because I have DOR as part of my diagnosis I never went back on any birth control and we wanted to start TTC again right away.  I stopped BFing when my first was 5 months, went back to the RE when she was 6 months, had a lap surgery in preparation to start cycling again and we got a surprise BFP when she was 7 months old.  We wanted a third, so I never went back on birth control again and got pregnant when my son was 10 months old.

You'll know when you feel ready to try again.  Having a newborn is definitely a life-changing event (especially your first) and while I know it is hard, try to just enjoy your pregnancy for now and 'worry' about TTC again after he/she is here and you are settled into your new life ;)
