Prenatal Vitamin "cocktails"?

I've been trying to do my research on prenatal vitamins, and I would appreciate advice or to hear what you ladies have taken. It's important to me to be whole foods based, and I think I've decided on New Chapter perfect prenatal. However, when I look up what is recommended to be on a prenatal vitamin, a lot of the natural vitamins don't meet those recommendations for calcium, iron, etc. PLUS there's the whole DHA thing. And now I see that some people take prenatal vitamins cocktail style, where they take a prenatal vitamin plus other vitamins throughout the day to maximize absorption, etc. Also not to mention these are pricey! Needless to say, I'm a little lost. Can you ladies give any guidance or point me to good resources? Thanks so much!

  • The most important things are folic acid in first tri and iron throughout. I wasn't fussy, so I just took regular prenatals, but if you care those are the 2 things I'd focus on.

Personally, I didn't bother with DHA and suspect that a lot of the hype is... hype. It can't hurt, though, especially if you're vegetarian/vegan or don't eat much fish.

  • My OB said DHA is a scam to jack up the price if prenatals. I just use what the doctor prescribed and its cheap with my insurance- $6 or so/ mo.

This actually made me laugh out loud. Look at nutritional research for your answer to DHA's impact on brain & eye development.

  • Laugh if you want. I figure an ob at one of the best hospitals in Chicago would insist on something if it were that important.
  • The real question is what the difference between a normal diet and a normal diet + a supplement is, not whether DHA is important. We'd all be on the short bus if it was as important as marketing tells us.
  • I take an OTC prenatal (Nature Made or Nature Bounty brand) and a separate EPA/DHA supplement of the same brand.....
