C-sections

Hospital Clothing

I've never posted on this board, but I'm thinking this might be the right place for my questions...

I am preggo with twins and have at least a 50% chance of having a c-section. As I'm packing my hospital bags, I'm unsure what clothing to pack for myself and the babies.
IF we do end up having a c-section, we will stay in the hospital for 3-4 days, so should I pack that many outfits for myself and the babies? Or does the hospital require you and the babes to wear hospital gowns?

Re: Hospital Clothing

  • As far as hospital requirements, that depends on the hospital but I've never heard of one requiring you to wear something specific.

I ended up taking too much for both of us. My LO just wore the hospital side-snap shirts they put him in until the day we went home so I ended up really only needing one outfit for him as opposed to the four or five I took : ) I wore the hospital gown the first day, stretchy yoga pants with a nursing tank the second day, and a loose fitting dress to go home on day three.

  • You shouldn't need anything extra for the babies unless you want them to wear their own clothes instead of the hospital shirts and blankets.

I just had twins via c/s 11 days ago and wore the hospital gown for the first 2 days then wore nursing-friendly maxi dresses for the rest of my stay and pretty much since then too. I'm still sensitive all around my incision so even yoga pants are still uncomfortable.

  • No twins experience, but I was in hospital gown until catheter came out and I showered, about 18hours PP (csection was 5pm) and then I wore yoga pants and a nursing tank, then a loose sun dress on day of discharge.. DS wore hospital tshirts until day of discharge..

  • The nurses at my childbirth class said we could bring as much stuff as we wanted but highly suggested that mom and baby wear the hospital clothes so we didn't have to deal with the laundry.  Which is what I did.  If I have another child I will use the hospital gowns for the baby however I will bring some of my own stuff for after the birth.  I hated wearing the gown.  It didn't close in the back and they didn't give me a robe so I basically just had a piece of cloth hanging from my shoulders.
  • Thank you so much ladies!!

My hospital had these gowns.  I LOVED them.  I'm plus-sized and was retaining a TON of fluid and this gown was still awesome.  I'm actually considering buying a couple to take with me and then use at home afterward.  Unfortunately, they only come in the one color.  Maybe I'll dye mine. :P

You'll need maybe one/two sets of pjs if you don't want to wear what the hospital provides.  A going home outfit for you.  A going home outfit with swaddle/receiving blanket for both babies.  And maybe one outfit per baby if you want to get photos done in hospital by the hospital photographer.

  • I was on three weeks of bedrest before delivery and packed an entire suitcase. I ended up wearing the hospital gown the entire time. All I used from what I packed were 2 robes and my slippers. Baby was in the NICU and not allowed outside clothes until discharge.

This is how it was for us, too. Except I had my section at 9:45 PM. I wore the gown until the next morning when I changed into my nursing nightgown and robe. Then the next few days I either wore that or maternity yoga pants + nursing tank.

  • I treated myself to 3 new pairs of soft black yoga pants, 3 dark colored nursing tanks and decided not to wear them until the hospital... nothing more comfy than slipping into fresh cotton after surgery & a shower!
    I also packed:
-package of Large White (aka bleachable) Haynes "granny pannies"
    -slippers & flip flops
-toiletries like deodorant, conditioner, lip balm, lotion, after bathing powder
-1 robe & 1 pillow from home and one night gown
and a cardigan I could put on to feel warm & semi-put together....

    For my husband:
-toiletries, 1 pair of jeans, 1 pair of sweats, 4 T-Shirts, underwear and a "dad kit" with magazines, snacks, a new movie to watch (our hospital had dvd players)

    For our Baby:
2 onesies, 2 sleep & play outfits, 1 going home outfit, 1 swaddle sack, mittens, and the brand of binky & bottle we wanted to use if necessary...
