potty training anyone?

My pedi suggested I start potty training.  I have introduced the potty to my DD (who is 18 months) and read a book about potties.  She will go and sit on it but only when her pants are on.  She seems to dislike the cold plastic she is expected to sit on! Has anyone ever potty trained before?  Any suggestions?  I am not sure if I should just let her walk around without pants on to get a feel for no diaper or just make her sit on it until she pees.  Her attention span at this age is so short! This is a whole new frontier for me as a FTM. Most people I have spoken with said they waited until their children were closer to two but I know in other countries this is the typical age. Any suggestions or support would be greatly appreciated!

    No real help except to say that I would wait until she is showing signs of readiness before attempting.  Don't turn it into a battle of wills.  We waited until DS1 was showing signs of readiness and it was the easiest thing with him.  We didn't use a potty chair, just an insert that sat on the big toilet seat and a stool to help him get up there.  I didn't want him to be afraid of toilets when we were out and about or at a friend's house.

    We potty trained DD a few months before two. We used the 3DPT method, straight to underwear. She did really well with it. We have introduced the potty to DS (set him one the potty when he tells us he is going) but haven't actually pressed it since he doesn't seem to have an interest the potty yet. We will probably try a little harder in a few months.

    Daughter has been interested for a few months but hasn't been consistent yet. She's 20 months. We got a ring for the big toilets, but I think those are kinda scary. She's little and it's so high. We got a chair thing and she likes sitting on it. I never let my kids run around naked so that won't work for us. Also, your kid isn't truly ready until he or she can jump. The same muscles for jumping are the ones used for regulating peeps. Good luck!

    Petunia. Can you clarify what you mean by jumping? We are thinking about starting potty training. My LO can jump but she is afraid to take both feet off the floor. Does that count or no?

    DS is very interested.  He knows all of the steps when others are using the toilet and sits on his new potty briefly.  Nothing has happened yet though.  We're not really pushing it too much.

    Yeh, my LO can't jump, not even close and he's been PT for a month (19 months). I'll have to give him the memo ;)

    One more note- I highly doubt your kegels help you jump (which are the muscles that let you or your little one start and stop their stream of urine).
