Baby Names

Lena- lay-nuh or lee-nuh

Ok one more, sorry!

How do YOU pronounce Lena? Both pronunciations are correct, but I'm wondering which one people will say more often?

Also, do you prefer Lena or Elin with sibset Audra?

Re: Lena- lay-nuh or lee-nuh

  • I would pronounce it Lee-na and I love it paired with Audra.

I actually like Lay-nuh more, but when I read it I usually automatically pronounce it Lee-nuh unless told otherwise.

Edit cuz I forgot to answer your other question: I like Lena better than Elin regardless of pronunciation, but I kind of think Audra and Elin sounds better when said together.

  • I've always pronounced it Lee-nuh. I think Elin sounds better with Audra, but would spell it the more common way (Ellen) to prevent having to explain it to people.

Elin is actually a Scandinavian name pronounced ee-Lynn, but thanks!

I love the name Lena. Elin is nice but I like Lena more.

    Both pair nicely with Audra.

I read it Lee-nah also. If you want the Lay-nuh sound, I suggest going with an alternative spelling. Otherwise constant correction - which sounds like is something that is going to annoy you because you are so worried about the pronunciation. Likewise with Elin, there will be enough people that will first guess Ellen on this one, that looks like correcting pronunciation will be an issue here too. I suggest decide to be ok with correcting people, or pick alternative names or alternative spellings to get the sound you want

  • I see "Lena" as Lay-nah" and "Lina" as Lee-nah..... and "Lana" as Lah-nah hahaha I know people tend to put y's everywhere, but if you're really concerned about it "Layna" is a little more direct...

    I like Audra though :-)

That's exactly how I see it as well. Len is never long e so I guess that's why I don't get the lee-nuh pronunciation.
It's only a long e when followed by another vowel.

  • Uh... I would say "LEH-na," like the singer Lena.  But that's not a choice.  :-/
  • Sorry, OP. I would see this name and also pronounce it "Lee-na."

Of the two, I think I like Lena slightly more. Both are good with Audra, though. Aside from pronunciation issues they are lovely names.

  • I would be inclined to say "Lay-na" but if I saw this name written I would ask the person how they pronounce it. I always try to be polite and do that when I see a name that could be said different ways. I prefer "Lay-na" to "Lee-nah" and I prefer it over Elin as well. Lena is pretty but I think the pronunciation issues would bother me too much to use it.
