UTI with no sympotms?

Anyone ever been told they had bacteria in their urine and didn't have any of the "usual" UTI symptoms to go with it?

I have had many UTI's in the past (when not pregnant) and it has always been very obvious.  When I went for a cervix check/heart check ultrasound yesterday and gave a urine sample they told me that they were going to give me Macrobid for 5 days.  I've had some increased braxton hicks and some discomfort when sitting down but just figured that was normal stuff and didn't think anything of it.  Totally thrown for a loop.

I know UTI's are common in pregnancy, but I'm worried about it being caused by GBS.  I tested positive for it whenever I was swabbed with my son (first OB check and then again at like 35 weeks) and just got antibiotics during labor which was no big deal, but was reading that if it's found in your urine it means you have a ton of it and need to be treated.

Anyone every have a UTI caused by GBS before?

I've had a UTI without symptoms when not pregnant, but I actually made it through pregnancy without one. Which is really saying something since I have to take preventative Macrobid after my pelvic exams and sex! I hadn't heard about the GBS correlation, but that is really interesting. I actually never got my results and I had a planned c/s, so I don't know if I was positive and I'm no help there.

Once they send your specimen off for culture, can they tell you in a few days what the bacteria is? I don't even know if that is a possibility...

  • I'm wondering about that too.  Whenever I've had them in the past and my results have been submitted online wherever it says "Specimen Cultured" there is always a NO next to it so I'm going to ask if they can send it away to be cultured.

I'm wondering how the heck I got this because in the past whenever I've had UTI's it was because of sex and we don't have sex when I'm pregnant because I can't due to previous cervix issues and stuff.

That's why I was thinking it might be caused by GBS or something which would suck.  Argh.

  • That's so weird- I thought they always sent suspicious UAs off for culture. Mine have always been sent, but I never hear back as to what the bacteria actually was. I usually get them from sex, but I hate to say I've gotten them from gyno visits and t/v ultrasounds before. I had a horrific one during stims for my IVF cycle and there was no sexing with my softball sized ovaries- so I can only assume the wand was to blame for that one.

  • Sorry about the UTI! I work in the medical field and in the hospital we sometimes get patients with symptomless UTI's but we usually don't treat them with Antibiotics unless their urine culture grows bacteria, which many times they don't but I'm not sure about the protocol especially if you're pregnant. Hope everything is ok.

Huh.  Yeah, the nurse called me when I was like leaving the parking lot of the office and said they found bacteria in my urine and that they had called in Macrobid ... so obviously they didn't give it time to grow any kind of anything.

  • My OB told me that I have a trace amount of bacteria in my urine, but said he wasn't going to prescribe anything if I have no symptoms. He just said to drink a ton of water. Should I be concerned? What is GBS?

  • Oh GBS or Group B Strep is usually something they swab your vagina and rectum for around 35 weeks.  If you come back positive you will have to have antibiotics during labor to make sure you don't pass it to your baby during delivery.  I tested negative for it with my daughter, but positive for it with my son and got the antibiotics during labor and he was perfectly fine.  It can come and go so that is why they usually don't test you until you are pretty far along because you could have it in the beginning of your pregnancy and not at the end.

If they find GBS in your urine that means you have a lot of it and it's more dangerous.  A swab at the end of pregnancy isn't even necessary then because they just automatically give you the antibiotics during labor.  If it's in your urine that is the only time they will treat you with antibiotics BEFORE labor as well.

  • Yep. I had a UTI at 34w and the tested GBS+ at 35w. Sigh. I have no idea which came first, but my UTI was also not presenting the usual signs.

I have had recurrent GBS infections for about four years they feel just like a UTI. When I was about twenty weeks pregnant I went in for cramps because I thought it could possibly be a flare up. All came back fine, however, GBS did show up in my urine but not enough to treat. I did not have the swab because of testing positive this way and was given the antibiotics when I was in labor. Both boys were born healthy and happy with no issues.

  • I'm kind of the opposite.  I had several UTI's with my first pregnancy and didn't test positive for GBS.  This time I had no UTI's and tested positive for GBS.
