EPO - not done vaginally?

My doc gave me the go-ahead for EPO. I am taking 2000mg orally in the AM and 1000mg orally in the PM. She said she "wasn't so sure" about wanting me to insert it vaginally. I am currently 1cm and "thick".

Re: EPO - not done vaginally?

  • Are you asking if anyone experienced success taking it orally only?

I took EPO for a week orally (1000 mg) and didn't really experience much of a change.  However on the 2nd night of doing 500 mg vaginally my water broke naturally and I had my baby 5 hours later.  Not sure if the EPO had anything to do with that or if it was just "my time", but I'm pretty sure the oral EPO didn't really do much in that week that I took it.  But I was also taking a much smaller dose.

  • One of my CNMs encouraged me to try it vaginally.  I only did one dose, because it left me feeling kind of itchy (TMI, sorry!), so I stuck to oral from there on out.  Not sure how much it helped if any because my MWs don't check you routinely.  But it made me feel like I was doing something.  Oh and I only took it with my first and I had both babies at 40w3d (charting)
  • I'm not so sure as to why your dr. "wasn't so sure"...I would have asked more questions.  Is their something unique about your situation that makes it not advisable for you to do the EPO vaginally?  I'm on my third pregnancy, and each time my CNM's have given me the go ahead to take it orally and vaginally beginning at 36 weeks.  I've had no problems with either of my last two pregnancies.

  • I've used EPO in previous pregnancies, both orally and vaginally. It's totally one of those things that's hard to really know how much it's helping or if your body would have progressed the same on it's own. I don't know why your dr wasn't sure about it. But then, if I remember correctly, I think I started taking it orally around 36 weeks and then added it vaginally around 38, so maybe he just wants you to wait?

  • I used it vaginally for myself but now I don't really recommend it unless a mom asks.

When an oil gets hot, it goes rancid.  We don't know what temperature EPO starts to turn but I'm willing to bet its around body temperature or slightly more.  Putting rancid oil inside your vagina could cause an infection and that's the last thing you want before you little one is born.

  • The practice I work out of recommends 1500 mg orally 3 times a day (4500mg total) starting at 36 weeks & you can add 500 mg vaginally at 38 weeks on.  1000mg per vag won't hurt.

  • My OB told me to do 1000 mg orally and 2000 mg vaginally starting at 36 weeks.  Honestly, I haven't been too consistent with it yet.  My doc is out of town this week, and DH is going to be gone overnight Thursday-Friday this week for his grandfather's funeral, so I don't want to do anything to encourage the baby to come until next week!  I will start again on Monday!
