Symphysis Pubic Dysfunction

I had it real bad last pregnancy.  Was on partial bedrest after 30 weeks.  It went away as soon as my daughter was born (AMEN!) It was by FAR the worst part of the pregnancy.

Well here's my problem.  I got in from a run this morning and in shifting weight to get my runners off, I felt that same stabbing pain right in my pubic bone.  It was oh-so-familiar.  Is it even possible to have it this early? I'm just over 9 weeks.  Seems ridiculously early.  I also have stupid lower back pain, same pain that accompanied the problem last time.  It cracks when I move, and is right in the SI joint (primarily on the left). BOO. Ideas?

Re: Symphysis Pubic Dysfunction

  • :(
I've heard from friends that had it and back troubles it does seem to come earlier in second pregnancies.  I'm not looking forward to my pubic symphysis dysfunction to come back--mine never resolved after the pregnancy and I had to do a lot of PT to walk/run normally again.  So my plan is to head back to the PT as soon as I start having trouble this time.  I'm not counting on it going away on its own this time!!!

Some people report the hip binder things help too...maybe your Dr has some suggestions as well.
Me and my Kiwi, both 38.  We struggled with RPL and were blessed with Micah.  I'm a full custody stepmom to Ethan!

Wow this sounds just like my last pregnancy I had a severe case of it and bed rested due to it causing pre term labor. They also sent me to PT which really didnt help. It wasn't until after I was born that I sought out Chiropractic care and I started to find relief. I am planning to see one here shortly because I can already tell my hip has been going out of alignment. Do you have a chiropractor near you you could see? I am planning to pay out of pocket but I have to be able to walk with having a toddler. I am already using my hip belt.

I started waddling at 13 weeks which is when my showed up. I am almost 10 and I can tell I need to focus when walking. I always thought it was normal aches and pains... but it was more serious. It wasnt until 27 weeks and landing in the ER for contractions did the OB telling me I had skeletal issue.

  • Reviving an old thread here, but I thought there might be quite a few more of us experiencing SPD now that we are much later in our pregnancies. Some of my symptoms started a while back, but it has gotten so bad that I now have a hard time standing for more than 20 minutes at a time and getting out of bed and rolling over. Trying to go for a walk seems to make it worse, and I have constant hip and lower back pain combined with my pubic bone feeling like I have just finished a 40 mile bike ride. I also have scoliosis (18 degree curvature) which is likely only aggravating the problem. I plan to talk to my ob about all of this at my apt this week to see if I can get going on some PT. I don't have a chiropractor, but am seriously considering seeking one out because I cannot go on like this for 6-10 more weeks, and I'm willing to try anything at this point. My question is this: I did google SPD and found some suggested exercises I can do, but some of them (squats, etc.) seem impossible and like they would do more harm than good given the severity of my symptoms at this point. For the ladies that have had really bad SPD - what treatment has worked best for you?

  • I started OR for mine last week. The only exercise is she really gave me was to push my knees apart with resistanceand then to push them together with resistance. It helps for a few minutes but really doesn't help. She also suggested a maternity support belt. I waddled my way through BRU and bought one. It helps a little with the SOD crotch pain but it makes my round ligament pain worse. Walking makes me want to cry and I feel like I constantly complain. I'm glad this is our last baby. I could not do this again.

  • Stupid auto correct. I started PT not OR and SPD not SOD

  • I've got this going on and was told those resistance knees apart/together exercises too... however, they don't help me, and now from an online group I've been told to scrap those and check out this book: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0897934806/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3FZCL431FZR1R&coliid=I137IKM7WGVP98

I haven't bought it yet, but if it makes it better, I'm all for it.
