Breastmilk drop???

My son is strictly breastfed seeing as he refuses the bottle.  For some reason out of nowhere my milk supply has dropped.  Even after 4 hours I am only getting about 2 ounces out of each breast when I used to get 5.  This is out of no where.   I just started taking fenugreek but I'm worried that it won't go back up or that he isn't getting enough.  He is nursing more since the drop too.  Has this happened to anyone else?  Any advice?

Re: Breastmilk drop???

  • Have you been taking any medication or change in your eating? Have you been drinking enough also?

Oatmeal helps with production as well. If you pump, just keep pumping as often as you can to try and raise the supply back up. Make sure you are drinking enough water.

  • No.  I don't think I did anything different.  The only thing I can think is maybe my period is about the start.  With my daughter my milk dropped around that time too.  I'll try to increase my water and oatmeal intake and see if that helps.  Thanks!

  • Mine recently did that too.... I focused on eating correctly and drinking enough water. I was going to give myself 2/3 days before freaking out and it only lasted 48 hous.

Your LO is nursing more frequent becuz he is eating smaller meals more frequent. That is good though because it is stimulating your breasts.. The best thing to boost supply is nursing as much and as often as you can :)

  • This just happened to me about two weeks ago. I just kept eating good and drinking tons, it took about a week for me to get back to normal but it all worked out in the end!

  • If he isn't taking a bottle, how do you know how many oz you are producing? Unless you are doing weighted feedings, there's no way to know how much he is eating. Maybe he is just at the breast more because he is going through a growth spurt. Unless you noticed marked change in your son's demeanor,he is losing weight, or his wet diapers decrease, I wouldn't worry.

  • I had a few days where I dropped also. I got really nervous because I have several weddings and events coming up that I need stash for. I took fenugreek, bought lactation cookies, got some extra sleep, and drank more water. I was back to normal in 2 days.

I dont know how much he is getting but I pumpthe other breast during feedings. I used to get 5 oz out of that now I get 2.5. Plus, my breast dont get as full. Im taking fenugeek and no increase yet.

  • This also happened to me. I made sure to increase how much water I was drinking and that helped me. Good luck!

  • After the first three months, your supply tends to even out a bit so you may not feel as full, but that doesn't automatically mean you aren't as productive.

I had a drop earlier this week and rebounded to pump more than I ever have with this kid. Honestly I didn't do anything different other than the kiddo woke up to eat a couple times during the night when she previously STTN. Just keep nursing any time your LO has interest and take good care of yourself. Hope it settles down soon!
