Hey so do you remember that post where OM wanted Chinese food and you had said something about how the occasional cheat meal help to restart your metabolism? Did you ever explain how it worked? I can't remember.

It doesn't jump start metabolism. What an occasional cheat does for you is keep you from careening off the bandwagon altogether. If you allow yourself to break free every once in a while, you're more likely to continue the diet or eating habits you're putting in place. If you cut everything out and keep strict about not cheating here or there, you're more likely to quit altogether with the mindset of "I've already messed it up, why continue with it?"
As for metabolism helpers, I've always liked the one about spicy food helping to increase metabolism, but mainly just because I love spicy food. Another one I read about was drinking cold water. It takes more work and effort from the body to work with cold water and bring it up to body temperature than it would by just drinking cool or room temp water.
Also, it's totally not freaky. I remember things like that all the time
