BFing starting the bottle wars

My DH and I are trying to get LO to take a bottle to get him ready for childcare in a month. We've tried three different kinds with no luck. Any tips you can share so we don't wind up spending a lot of money and frustration?

Make sure the milk is warm and the bottle nipple is warm (put a warm washcloth over it just before offering). Put some breast milk on the outside of the nipple to entice him. Touch his face with your fingers as you put the bottle in his mouth; do this by cradling the bottle in the soft spot between your thumb and index finger. Touch one cheek with your thumb, the other with the rest of your fingers; the skin-to-skin will remind him of the breast. And don't wait until he's starving to offer.

Hope you find something that works for you!

  • Thanks ladies! My H has been giving the bottle but I've still been in the room. I'll try going out. Skio, your tips are great!

  • DS1 would not take a bottle if I was even in the house...he somehow knew I was still around. Try going out to run an errand.

  • Try giving the bottle yourself. My DD preferred to take the bottle from me. It certainly can't hurt!!
  • Have you tried a bottle that is like the breast? We are using comotomo bottles because they look and have the same shape. I'd look into getting a breast lookalike bottle.
  • I'm going through the same issue. DD did awesome until a month ago and now she wont hardly take one. She's got to be really hungry before she takes one. Dh is working a ton so I try to give her one but I usually cave BC after fighting her and entertaining my 2 year old is really hard.

  • with my first dd (second child) she was fully Bf until i returned for work right around 3 months... and we went through EVERYTHING. lol... she didn't like any bottle until she finally took the basic little Gerber bottles with the tiny nipple. Its really flexible and soft and that was the only one we found for her to work (and didn't hurt that it only cost like 3 something for a pack of three) lol.. we literally owned one of each brand trying to get her to find one she liked and that is what she settled on.

Also i do highly suggest you not being around, I went for a walk to help and dad, gram, auntie whomever happened to be around to help get her onto the bottle held her in a cradle position facing them almost like she would be is she was BFing and that seemed to comfort her.

  • Thanks for the tips! We wound up purchasing a Dr. Browns bottle (since many people rave about them) and he'll take that if he'snot over tired or over hungry. Hopefully with more practice that'll stop too cuz it's bound to happen at his nanny's house!!!

  • I've been there and tried 4 types of bottles until I found the lansinoh bottle called momma it's shaped like a breast and has the most realistic nipple LO took to it right away with no gagging or screaming GL!
