words like a dagger to the heart

I was in the store with my grandma who watches LO while we are at work. Well I was holding LO until we went to check out. When I started to check out I placed him in the basket part of the cart. He started to stand but I had my eye on him and was handling the situation. Well she kept telling me to watch him and what not. Then she said, "you don't know him." My stomach dropped and felt like someone punched me in my chest. I don't want go cry but I can't stop.

  • That's crappy, I'm sorry. Of course you know your child. Trust your gut.

  • I'm sorry your Grandma said that to you, DD will sometimes try to stand in a cart as well and I'm with her 24/7.

  • I think you definitely need to address it with her. How absolutely unacceptable. I am sorry. Giant hugs

  • How awful!! Why people open their mouths is beyond me. She might watch your LO during the day, but that doesn't give her the right to say anything like that to you.

  • Thats harsh. Even more that it's coming from Grams... Not that it's an excuse, but maybe she didn't mean it to be as hurtful as it did. Either way, I would say something.  :Hugs:

  • That is so hard to hear!  My mom says things like that to me.  I am willing to bet she didn't mean it to be hurtful.  Not a good thing to say though!

  • Holy shit. I would have gone off on her after the initial shock. My stomach hurts just reading that. I am so sorry.

  • Thank you guys for all the support. I know she didn't mean it maliciously but it still makes you wonder when you hear that. I want to be the best mom I possibly can be and I want Jayce to see that too. This is the one thing I couldn't stomach if I became a failure.
  • So not fair for her to say that.

  • That's so insensitive and uncalled for, I'm sorry she said that to you. You're his mom, there isn't a soul on Earth that knows him better than you. Period.

  • That is absolutely ridiculous. I don't give two shits about how often she has him. You're HIS mother. Have confidence in the fact that no one in this world will ever know him better than you do.

  • The thing you have to remember about caregivers like her is she must lead a sad existence to think she is in any way better bonded to a child than his own mother. It's fairly common among people who work with kids for some to say things that allude to a better relationship with the child than even Mom. These people tend to have pretty boring empty lives and NEED to think they are number one. I assure you, every child views Mom as number one and I would seriously rethink any caregiver who says otherwise. Sorry you were so hurt!  >:D<
