Sweet potato allergy?

Has anyone dealt with this?

My son is 9 months old and whenever he has sweet potato, about two hours later, he projectile vomits.  He's not a spitty baby at all, and this is real, forceful lakes of orange puke, not just milk spit-up.

His pedi has advised avoiding it from now on but says there is no test that can be done for sweet potato because it's such a random allergy.  Is that true?

He hasn't had any trouble with any other kind of food--dairy, eggs, nuts, wheat all seem to be fine.  He does have eczema, though.

Any experience appreciated, thanks.

Your pedi is wrong. Testing can be done for a sweet potato allergy. I would see a Pediatric Allergist, given your LO's reaction to sweet potato, and the fact that he has eczema. Eczema and allergies often go together.

Some allergists won't test until age 1, but some will test earlier. Keep in mind, if LO has an intolerance rather than an allergy, the allergy test will be negative. The only way to know if it's a true allergy, is by testing.

Thanks--I was wondering if the two were linked.

Since we stopped sweet potatoes his eczema has been much better.

Funny you mention this because I was giving my son sweet potato chunks a while back for a couple days. The first lunch and dinner with them he would have super watery diarrhea. While he was eating them I'd notice him gagging too. By the 2nd day I was suspecting the sweet potatoes so I gave 1 more trial and sure enough vomitted right after eating them.

I declared them an allergy but haven't had it diagnosed yet. Seems like a random allergy, thankfully that's it so far. My DD has 4 of the top 8.

My daughter has FPIES to milk, my son had it to soy. I've read that sweet potatoes are often an FPIES trigger. Unfortunately, there is no test for FPIES. Of course, this could be an IgE mediated allergy, but if the test comes back negative and you still feel there is a reaction - something you might want to consider. It's not well understood or widely known about by doctors, so often goes misdiagnosed or undiagnosed for a while. Delayed onset severe vomiting is a symptom. For info...https://fpiesfoundation.org/

I third the fpies information. My son is fpies to sweet potatoes among other things. He get forceful projectile vomiting 3-4 hours after eating them and will vomit for several (10ish) minutes straight. Check out the fpies website above and see one of the doctors listed in the find a doctor section! HTH.
Baby is fpies to diary, soy, rice, squash, and sweet potatoes.

DD couldn't eat sweet potatoes or tomatoes at that age.  She'd get hives on her mouth and her poops would give her horrible rashes.  We've reintroduced tomatoes (she's 15 months next week) and she does fine with them.  Sweet potatoes haven't really been reintroduced because we don't eat them much and she's not on purees anymore.  I'll try it again soon.  If he has that severe a reaction, I'd cut them out for a couple months and then try again.
