Avery - boy or girl?

We are still struggling to settle on both a boy and a girl name.  I really like Avery and was thinking of that for a girl but I have seen so many comments (on other web sites) that this is more of a boy's name.  What do you think?

Also up for other suggestions.  We like also like Lydia and Owen.  (DD#1 is Alaina)

DH really likes Emily...it is cute, but I think it seems way too common.

Re: Avery - boy or girl?

  • I like Avery much better on a boy.
  • Loading the player...
  • I associate Avery with the character in Charlotte's Web, and the only Avery I know is a teenage boy, so I think of it as a boy name.  I really like Lydia for a girl!

    Boy.

It makes me cringe every time I hear it on a girl.
    I completely agree.

  • It's a very masculine name. It is not a unisex name. If you name a girl Avery, you are giving her a mans name.

  • I've posted this before, but I really think Avery is a terrible name for a little girl.

Avery is a character in Charlotte's Web.  A book that I would venture to say 90% of children still read and many of them read/are read this book in school.  I feel like children, who often seek to be cruel, are going to pounce on this fact if poor little girl Avery is anything but the most popular kid in her class.

It's an old boys' name that's "gone girl." When I used to hear it on girls, I always thought it was so odd because it made me think of an old farmer in overalls. Now it's hard for me to picture on a boy, there's just so many girls with the name.

Honestly, I'm sick of both Emily and Avery.

ETA: I love Lydia! That's adorable.

  • Avery is a boy's name. Unfortunately though, I think it's officially gone to the girls. *sigh*

I love Lydia and Owen. Good choices!

  • I LOVE Avery on a boy! I agree with PPs, it makes me sad that so many girls are named this now. Same with Addison, Riley, etc.

  • Initially I thought boy, but I have a coworker with a daughter named Avery and it fits her perfectly. She's headed off to college next year, so it wasn't a recent, fad choice either.
  • Girl

  • I've heard the name twice and both times on little girls. One is 4 yrs old and one is 2yrs old... I don't picture it as a boys name now...
  • I think it sounds girly. Nothing about it is masculine to me but it seems I'm in the minority here
  • I know it's traditionally a boy's name, but then so are Evelyn and Ashley.  So that logic is somewhat flawed.  I see it more as a girl's name though.  Every Avery I've known has been a girl, with the sole exception of television character Murphy Brown's son, but then he was named after Colleen Dewhurst's character, Avery Brown.

I would not hesitate to use Avery for a girl.

  • I never knew it was traditionally a boys name until The Bump. I think it's very feminine sounding and the only Avery I l know is a woman in her 30s.
  • I think Avery is super common too (since you mentioned that about Emily). It's also NMS at all, I don't see the appeal of it at all, not really sure why. Anyway, just my opinion. And I think it can go both ways, though is more popular for girls recently. I love your other names.

  • My DD's name is Avery. I love it obviously. There is a little boy in her church class named Avery too but I normally only see girls named Avery now.

  • Boy.

Although sadly, girls seem to be taking it over. I much prefer it on a boy.

I still think of it as a boy's name but I agree that it's going the other direction. At this point I think it's unisex.
  • For me, it's one of the few truly unisex names.
  • For sure a girl. It's not a manly name at all.

Male for sure, etymologically and historically.

Also, the first and only Avery I knew for the first 21 years of my life was a friend of my dad's. A very tall, hairy man.

I know that it's a trend to name girls Avery, and that's the prerogative of the parents.  Male names on girls don't bother me as much as other posters, but to me, this one is like naming a baby girl Richard.

  • I vote Lydia! I would use it but DH hates it. Avery I would think probably girl (especially if I knew it was a child) but would think could possibly be boy.
  • I had my first daughter 10 years ago and her middle name is Avery. At that time, I had never heard it used before other than on Jerry Mcguire. It was his girlfriends name in the beginning who punched him in the face. BUT, when I heard it, there was no part of me whatsoever that thought this name sounded masculine. And I still don't.

  • unisex -- this is my niece's name and her parents chose it exactly because it was unisex... and it suits her smiley little self!

  • Avery is a boy's name. I know it has an -ee sound on the end, but that does not make it a female name.

    I really like Lydia.

  • Boy. I do know more girls than boys with this name, but the more I hear it the more masculine it sounds. It just doesn't sound pretty for a girl to my ears.
