She's getting her own room!

DD turned two last week, on July 25th.  And we are in the process of setting up her big girl room.  She's slept in our room, in her own crib since she was born (first because we lived in a tiny apartment, and now we just haven't had the time or money to do the renovations her room required). But now we are just down to the painting and getting all her furniture in there.  We bought her new twin bed a few days ago, I mean, it's go time.  Soooo, why am I being so crazy about this??

Our sleep schedules are off because me and DH both work odd hours.  She doesn't have a set bedtime, never has.  I'm stressing over how she is going to handle being alone in her room.  She has issues with the dark, she has to have her nightlight on.  I plan to have my old iphone hooked up in her room to speakers so I can play music for her if she needs it.

I'm 13 weeks pregnant with #2 and I KNOW it's past time for her to be in her own room.  Any ideas on how to make the transition easier for her (and for me!?)??  I'm terrified she's going wind up back in our room or one of us will be in her bed.

  • Let her pick out a special item: stuffed animal, blanket, flashlight, twilight turtle, etc, to get her feeling comfortable.

  • I would probably start getting a bedtime routine implemented ASAP, so the same tihing happens at the same time in the same order every night (within 30 minutes or so, so bath starts between 7-7:30 for example).  That way, when you switch her to her room, she'll only deal with the one different thing, not a different routine every night.  My son switched remarkably well.  We showed him his new room at the various steps in the remodel process and talked about his new room a lot.  I suggest if she does freak out, you lay with her in her bed for a while rather than letting her come back to your room.  But I think a bedtime routine will help too.  And of course make sure whatever makes her feel secure is with her, whether that's a blanket, toy, binkie, whatever.  As for the dark, we have a lamp with a nightlight in it, a regular nightlight, and a dreamlites doggie that projects stars for 20 minutes.  He's not particularly afraid of the dark, but he likes them all.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!
