Odd Shoe Rec

So among all of DS's other issues, he may need braces for his feet/legs to help support himself. He has low tone and his feet tend to turn in and out a lot. He just looks kinda floppy and doesn't really know what to do with his feet when he stands. So my question is, have any of you bought high top shoes for your LO? I tried Target today with no luck. I'd like something that is easy to get on and off and isn't too heavy, but I would like the support of something a little taller than a regular shoe - hence the high top. I also have no idea how sizes work that little! He has tiny feet and he fits into 3-6 month infant shoes. Any suggestions?

Re: Odd Shoe Rec

  • I have friends who swear by Stride Rite for supportive shoes. I'm too cheap to buy them, but in your case I'd definitely spring for them. I know they have at least one high top: https://www.striderite.com/store/SiteController/striderite/productdetails?stockNumber=BB35749&showDefaultOption=true&skuId=***8********BB35749*M065&productId=8-121361&catId=cat5500691&searched=true I'd guess your son wears a size 2 or 3 (I think 0 = newborn, 1 = 0-3 months, 2 = 3-6 months, 3 = 6-9 months)

  • We can only buy DS striderite or the sesame street wide sizes at Payless, nothing else fits his weird feet! The top part of his foot is very high, so most shoes will fit fine through the toe, but are just too tight on his chubby feet! We love striderite and I try to find them on sale. Amazon has good sales every now and then and if you have a store near you, they can measure him and give you some suggestions.
  • What about Chucks? Especially since the little kid ones are super cute too!

I know the high top/white shoes that I got for DS were from Walmart of all places (they had ones that you can see where the toe is to know if they need the next size up), and were better for support without being too hard on the bottom (because you do want some flex)...

If you do end up needing braces/orthotics, I'd HIGHLY recommend going in person to NorthStar Podiatric Lab up in Hugo!!  Yes, go there LIVE, it's worth the trips because they can adjust anything that is needing adjustment on the spot.  That's who I have do my lifting shoes and it's absolutely FANTASTIC.
