Picking birth control

It's time to pick a new birth control (I've been on the mini) and DS no longer gets BM. My dr. suggested Loestrin for the low amount of estrogen (because I told her I hate the side effects) or Yaz (because I tend to have pretty severe PMS). Yaz scares me due to all the commericals. I've read reviews for LoLoestrin FE and they were better than Yaz but some women felt it gave them horrible acne, others said it cleared up their acne, and some said it made them moody and tired.

What are you ladies on now?

I foresee a vasectomy in DH's near future.

Re: Picking birth control

  • I had a bad experience with Loestrin. When I was on Loestrin, I had horrible depression, anixety, and mood swings so I got off it really quick.

H is planning on getting a vasectomy after the next one in a few years. So we are in the same boat as trying to figure out what to do in the meantime.

Hope you find something that works for you!

  • I used yaz and all the others on those commercials. They are the only types I ever used. I had no problems and got pregnant with the boys my third month off of them.

  • I was on yaz in college and had absolutely no issues, for what that's worth.

I have the para guard IUD now and have no complaints thus far. I had it placed in November. Supposedly it can give you super heavy periods, but I haven't had a PP period yet so I can't speak to that.

  • I was on Ortho Tricyclen Lo. Obviously my body didn't care and I got pregnant anyway. When I was on it, though, the only side effect was nausea for an hour after I took it.
  • My best friend was on Yaz for a long time without any issues. If you're comfortable with that, then by all means go for it!
I'm on Mirena, which I love, but if you look around you'll see tons o lf love for it as well as tons of hate for it.

I reacted badly to every type of BCP my OB attempted to put me on. I've been on almost every kind of pill in the past 10 years.

I have the Mirena now and I love it!

Also, I haven't had a period since before I was KU with DS. I don't know if that has to do with breastfeeding, but I stopped two weeks ago, and no signs of AF yet!

I got pregnant on a generic version of the ortho pills.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • I love my paraguard although I went 35 days without AF this month and thought I was KU. But that could have more to do with nursing.

  • I've been on both Loestrin FE and Yaz. I preferred Yaz. I had like no side effects with Yaz and periods were 3 days tops. On Loestrin FE I had horrible mood swings, bloating, a metallic taste in my mouth from the extra iron, I had zero sex drive, I screamed at my H, cried for no reason. It was awful.

But I suppose everyone reacts differently to those things.
  • I have mirena. I like it but I kind of wish I had the paraguard because even with the mild dose of local hormones in the mirena, I have 0 desire and that really sucks. I also get pretty bad cramps which I never had before but maybe that's just how my ute reacts after pregnancy, I don't know.

  • I am terrified to have the mood changes, acne, and weight gain. Each option has one extreme or the other, depending on who you ask. I don't want any of that ish in my body. It has been heavenly being off of estrogen for so long.

  • I'm on lo loestrin and love it. I have been on it since 6wks pp. I have not had any bad side effects! No weight gain or acne or mood swings. I just got my first AF this month due to weaning but I know someone else on the same pill that does not get AF every month and I'm okay with that, although that may be a bad ghing for others

  • Just started back on Necon (BCP).  It was great pre-baby and so far so good now.

  • I have a generic lo estrin and so far it's been good. This is my second week. I was nauseated the first week but that has subsided. We will see about any other side effects as I keep taking it. I've been angry and sad lately but I don't know if that's just stress or the pill. If it keeps up I think I will try something else but right now I am pretty stressed so I'm blaming that more.
  • I've tried a few kinds of BC.  I was on Ortho Tri-Cyclen LO, a generic form of Ortho Tri-Cyclen, Depo-shot, the mini-pill, and now Mirena.

I've had no problems with any of the pills except remembering to take them every day.  The depo-shot was great too except I never got my period and it freaked me out.  At that time in my life it was reassuring to have a period every month so I knew I wasn't KTFU.

After DS I was on the mini-pill until I stopped BFing.  I went on Mirena and HATED it.  I bled every day!  EVERY DAY.  It wasn't until a couple weeks ago that it finally stopped.  It took about 5 months.  I'm loving it, finally.  My periods are gone and I have no side effects.  Since DH & I plan to start trying in another year or so its perfect for us.  We can just get it taken out at that time.

Out of all of them that I've used I would stick with Mirena.  Its so easy and even if the first few months suck, in the long run its great.

  • I think I'll try loestrin until we decide when DH should get a V. Maybe if I act like a raging bitch and pretend to not have a sex drive, that will speed up the process.
