Should I use Zofran?

So I've seen a lot of posts about ladies using Zofran for MS. Is it for throwing up or just nausea? And is it an over the counter drug? I'm so nauseous and feel like i want to throw up right now I can't even get out of bed but I haven't thrown up yet, just a little heaving (sorry that's gross). Not sure what to do. :( I was doing so good today too! Dumb.

Re: Should I use Zofran?

  • You need a prescription for it. I have used it and it's helped a lot.  The nausea is what causes you throwing up... so I'm not sure how to answer that.  But, yes, it generally helps with MS.  I've also heard B6 and Unisom helps as well ... as does ginger.

  • It's for both and it requires a prescription from a doctor. I take it every day of I can't get off the couch.
  • It was a lifesaver for me! At first my doctor suggested B6...but I couldn't keep it down. So I made an appointment and he wrote me a prescription. I have been taking everyday for a week and can actually function without throwing up every 20 min. Hope you get some and feel better!

  • Ive been offered it and suggested it by my dr....but I take meds only when absolutely neccessary, and I don't think I'm there yet. (I've only lost 2 pounds) but I think it would be helpful for those days I wake up projectile vomiting all over the walls? You will have to talk to your ob as decide if meds are necessary.
  • I got a prescription cause I was actually throwing up and it has helped alot. My doctor also gave me a over the counter remedy he says works alot as well. Take 500mg of Ginger 3 times a day and also with that take a quarter of a pill of unisom with it. I guess unisom can make you tired, so taking a smaller dose won't make you zonk out.

  • Thanks ladies. I'll try the ginger and if that doesn't work I'll call my doc. I'm thankful I haven't thrown up yet but in nauseous everyday for the majority of the day. No bueno.
  • Zofran is a godsend for me. I take it like 4 times a day or I seriously think I would have been hospitalized. I called my doctors office and asked them to call a prescription in to my pharmacy - they didn't require an appointment.

  • I don't know if this is good or bad news, but Zofran also comes as a suppository. If you can't keep a pill down this is another ... errr... insertable option.

  • I drank peppermint tea with my first pregnancy and it worked great! This time around both peppermint tea and ginger tea make me nauseous. I am using the ginger gum and it helps ok. I'm still going to ask for the zofran bc I haven't been able to eat anything that great yet. I pretty much get by on ice and pretzels.
  • Took it for the first time today and it helped. Also actually helped w some anxiety I was having cause it may cause drowsiness.

My daughter has hyperemesis during her period. We use the suppositories. Most of the time that doesn't even work. :( my poor baby
  • Zofran helped me so much with my first pregnancy!!
  • Zofran is what got me through the day for half of my pregnancy with DD. I'm 6w today and the nausea is just starting. I have no qualms about calling my doctor and asking for it if I need it again.

  • My dr prescribed it... I tried it twice. It didn't work for me, but I think it works well for most. I hear it causes pretty bad constipation though ;)
  • Only took it for 2 days so far but they were the best two days of my 9 weeks of pregnancy !!! One BIG downside for me is constipation ... But I would rather have that then the horrible nausea and vommitting I was having ... Will start with 100% cranberry juice tomorrow

  • So I started taking Ginger suppliments today... We'll see how that works through the weekend and if it doesn't help at all I'm defintely calling in the Zofran Monday. :-&
  • I have hyperemesis gravidarum. I was prescribed Zofran because i can not keep Anything down. i lost 10 in 5 day. It works wonders for me, i still have slight nausea but im not puking multiple times a day anymore and and can finally keep down fluids.

  • I have HG and am on the zofran pump. Last pregnancy I resisted meds until I ended up in the ER. I don't recommend that. It's a lot easier to get it under control early than to reign it back in from a death spiral. Believe me, I'm in the hospital for the second time this week. I'd call your oB and ask. Also, recent studies say ginger can actually make things worse because it increases stomach acid. Just an FYI

I'm on it... and I have extreme morning sickness that last all day. If I skip a dosage (8 hours) I am throwing up everything and/or gagging if I don't have anything in my stomach. I think I went 4 days with constant throwing up until I called the doctor... I NEVER was this sick with my DS. Down 8lbs since BFP.  If you do get on it make sure you take Colace it causes horrible constipation.

  • Is anybody taking zofran with the unisom tablet?

I had HG my last 2 pregnancies and my OB gave me 8mg zofran every 8 hours, it worked very well at first, but yesterday and today it has not worked at all, it works for maybe an hour. i lost about 30 lbs last time and hoping that I can get a hold of it now before it gets worse.

  • Zofran is magical for me. I resisted during my last pregnancy and finally gave in after 3 weeks of being extremely sick w/o relief. This time I got an Rx at my first appt. no messing around this time!
    DD 9.14.05 DD 11.12.08 EDD baby girl #3 3.4.14!
  • Helped me soooooooooo much.
  • I haven't vomited yet either, but if you're so nauseous you can't eat, you're gonna get sick. I chose to take it because I had to eat something
  • I take ginger along with my prenatal. I'm definitely more sick with this one than my first... I can't win. Empty stomach kills me. So I try to eat something and I feel worse. Ugh!
  • As many other ladies has said, it's a prescription drug.  I think it's mostly for nausea but will help with vomiting as well.  I personally don't like it.  I took it for morning sickness with DS and it gave me a horrible headache.  Made me worse instead of better.
This time around I've been taking 50mg of vitamin b6 in the morning and evening and it's helped tremendously!

  • The unison/b-6 combo seems to work for a lot of ladies. It's just been released as an rx called Diclegis. I haven't tried the combo, am using zofran which doesn't help that much. Just ginger ale!
