Irked with DCP (long)

So for the past few weeks LO has been getting his molars...it's a trying time, not a lot of sleep, not himself.  Well everyday we get a phone call from DCP about how he's not himself.  DH picked him up early last Thursday and stayed home with him last Friday, we took him to Urgent Care on Saturday because he got a fever that spiked Friday night and he wasn't eating much, and there was nothing wrong but the molars.  Then this past Tuesday he had a ROUGH day, rash, diarrhea, fell off his little recliner because he stood up and danced on it and hurt his right foot. We monitored his foot, because there was no bruising or swelling, and he was still walking on it although with a little limp, but no reaction when pressure or rotation and flexing was done anywhere. DH asked DCP to monitor him walking and if it was bad to call him. DCP called DH Wednesday and said he wasn't really walking much, so DH took him to his pedi, they said all the gunky stuff was molars, and the rash may be viral (it went away he has sensitive skin like me and we think a different sunscreen was used), and that his foot was probably just real minor sprain or strain, and that walking more would help it out.  So DH takes him back to DCP.  Then Thursday we get an incident report noting that he had come in with a limp the day before...because they decided they needed to monitor just in case there's a reason to believe there's abuse!!!! WTH?! So now today they call and say he's not himself...and they think maybe it's an ear infection...well two docotrs have decided that's not the case...and once again his molars...the flat part is trying to push through his gums...anyone that has had their wisdom teeth come in must know that is not plpeasant...and even if you never did like me...it doesn't look pretty or fun. However, DCP does not find this a suitable explanation for why he's uncomfortable and not upbeat. :( I am insulted and irritated.

  • I would put them in contact with your pedi or get a doctors note saying he is fine. I find as soon as I have formal documentation, the DCP will back down.

  • Could you give him Tylenol before daycare drop off in the morning? We know DD is teething when a little painkiller does a 180 on her mood.

  • yeah give them a doctor's note. I would totally be bothered too!

Trying to see it from their POV, I guess they don't know exactly what's going on in your house. Have you shared with them all the times you've picked him up to take him to the doctor? I mean, do they KNOW that's where your LO was being taken when ya'll picked him up?

Hopefully with some additional documentation from your doctor they'll back off.

  • They do, because we take him back and tell them.  I need to get that note I suppose. I appreciate what they're trying to do...but it's the whole...I KNOW we're good people, that shoudl be obvious to them too.  I totally get why they need to look out for LO, and I appreciate that, but hate having that stigma.

  • I'm sure they are documenting all of this to protect themselves, rather than thinking you guys are abusing them, no?? At least that's how it comes across to me. It might be frustrating, but I would prefer too much communication and reporting rather than not enough. Besides, it honestly sounds like your LO might be fighting something off. There was a pretty good study that came out recently that found that contrary to what many parents believe, teething is NOT associated with a fever. Perhaps a mild low-grade elevation in temp for a few days (99ish) but not a higher fever. If your LO did have that, then I bet he was fighting a virus or something.
