Babies: 3 - 6 Months

no 4 mo wakeful?

I'm dreading the sleep regression that should soon be upon me after reading so many posts here. Just curious, any moms who had no problems at all? It may just be wishful thinking but I'm hoping we won't have too many sleepless nights.

Re: no 4 mo wakeful?

  • My son JUST turned 4 mo on July 29, and so far everything is fine. I'm hoping we'll skip it, too.  I've read that it's mostly because they start to get distracted while eating and therefore eat less, so they wake up at night to eat and make up for those missed calories.  I'm making sure he gets his full feedings in.  Hopefully that helps!

  • Nighttime sleep I see no difference. Daytime sleeps he is so much harder to get down for a nap. I used to be able to take the dogs on a quick walk and he would be asleep in the baby carrier after 5 minutes now he is so much more alert and looking all around that I can go on a 45 minute walk and still no sleep. The dogs are definitely happier!
  • It finally happened.  We turned 4 months last week and we used to get 6 hrs at night before a feeding.  Now she wakes at 3 hrs, doesn't want fed, wants to go to sleep but fights it. and then after her feeding at 3am, fights sleep again. During the day she is fighting bottles but at night takes them good.

  • The biggest difference I notice is that LO has become a lighter sleeper, so she'll wake up much easier to noises. She did start STTN without feedings, but then at 4 months started getting up again. Her nighttime sleep is more inconsistent. One night she'll STTN, another night she's up once, next night twice. I'm trying to feed her more during the day to see if it will help her STTN and it seems to be working. But we're really not having as tough of a time as I know other people have been having. I think we're managing it pretty well.

  • With DD1, no problems. She was a thumb sucker and would wake up but would find her thumb and go right back to sleep. I was also really diligent about making sure she had full feedings throughout the day so she wasn't hungry at night.

With DD2, we're having some problems, but I'm not getting myself too worked up. I really think self soothing and good daytime eating are the key. If your little one has those two things under control, I think you can very well get through without any trouble! I wish I reminded myself of that a week ago ;)

  • My older DS had zero sleep regressions....like none. Younger DS (4 1/2 months) went through what I Think was the 4 month wakeful just before he turned 4 months. It lasted 8 nights and was terrible and then, just like that, it was over. Back to normal. Weird.

  • Good to know, ladies! Thanks. I know each baby is different and whatever mine throws at me I'll make it through.
  • my LO went through it, but it wasn't terrible. She woke up earlier from naps, and I'm pretty sure she woke up throughout the night more-but she never woke ME up, she just babbled to herself in her room and then fell back asleep (I caught her a few times when I would get up). She doesn't do that now, so I'm assuming it was the 4 month wakeful.

  • DD is just barely 5 months and has always been a great sleeper.  She may have barely gone through a wakeful period over the last month, but only twice did she wake up in the night (and only needed a binky).  Otherwise she has just started getting up a little earlier, and taking shorter naps.  Really the 4th month hasn't been nearly as horrible as I was afraid it would be :)

DD turned 4 months last Wednesday and it hasn't happened for us - actually the last 3 nights she didn't wake up at all for her MOTN feeding like she usually does. Typically she would go down between 8 and 9, wake up 3-ish for a feeding, then go back down till we have to get up for the day at 6. The last 3 nights, she goes down between 7-8 and doesn't wake up till 5ish. She was still sleeping this morning at 6 and I had to wake her up!

She also went from eating 10-12 oz of BM between 7 and 5 at daycare to eating 25 oz and another 4-5oz at bedtime so I'm sure that plays a role too - she isn't waking up because she's not hungry. I'm hoping this continues!

  • I posted on this a while ago, saying that it hadn't happened for us, yet.  A few nights later, DS got up at 12:30 and 4, but it only lasted one night.  The few days following, he didn't nap very well, but after about 4 days, everything was back to normal.
