Inconsolable

So LO has been waking up every 20 minutes or so, most nights this week. Tonight it is really bad. At one point she woke up lightly whimpering and it very quickly devolved into hysterical crying...which did not stop for another 20 minutes....despite, holding, back rubbing, shushing, singing, diaper changing, rocking and passing on to DH. I brought her out to the kitchen in desperation, where she saw our pet furball. After that she slowly cheered up...but has been whimpering and ear pulling since. This all started 2 hours into her Tylenol dose. No temperature. Damn these teeth. DH is on the couch. He was up wi LO from 1-7am yesterday. Willing to take any advice.....or field similar tales of woe.

We're not inconsolable here, but LO is having sleep issues tonight. I'm sure it's teething since his gums have been so swollen for over two weeks that we were sure they'd be through the next day.

He is normally nursed to sleep, but this time he wasn't having it. I nursed him at 9pm then he fussed so he played for a half hour and we tried again.
    Nursed. More fussing.
So he snuggled with daddy (he won't snuggle like that with me because I have milk).
His eyes started drooping, but he stayed awake til 10:15.

    Transfer to bed.
Wake up at 12:30. Nurse to sleep.
    Wake up 3:15. Currently nursing.

I suspect he will be awake again in 2-3 hours. :(

Normally he sleeps 9-ish to 3-ish then 3:30-ish to 7-ish.

I hope these teeth pop through soon.

  • LO is in bed with us. She has had some rough nights this week. The only thing that works for us is snuggling. It is 4:30 and the third wake-up. So, much better than last night. Hand in there mommas; we are tough!

  • @maven212 so sorry you guys are having a rough time. D's teething is horrible and I agree with PP lots of snuggles and distractions.

  • Awake again at 5:45.
Daddy was just about to leave for work so we said goodbye and got ourselves a snack.
We are gonna try to go back to sleep for another hour of two. (It's 6:40 now)
    Mamma is tired.
  • @maven212, I'm so sorry! I guess if she doesn't have a temperature, she probably doesn't have an ear infection and it's the teething, but maybe you could call the doc just to be sure.

DS was up a lot last night too. I ended up sleeping in the bed with him because he was ok when I holding him but then super crying in the crib. At one point I put him down with a bottle, and he fell asleep laying on top of it. I pulled the bottle out because I thought he'd be more comfortable, and he woke up and started crying again! Noooo!

Sorry for all the rough nights, mamas! I'm hoping that DS is just getting it all out of his system and growing really big and strong so that after this he'll finally be able to sleep longer.
  • @surpriseat39, @persephonerose, @jkvogt, @maebb this is, like, reading about my life. Thanks for checking in. We were up at 1:30, 2, 2:30, 3, 3:20, 4:15, 6 and 7. One thing i thought it was kind of strange, but apparently is normal because you guys are going through it too - is that cuddles seem to do the trick. Sometimes it takes a lot of cuddling, but that seems to be what she needs. The human side of me loves to give cuddles to help her, but had been nervous about doing it because the extremely tired as to be robotic side of me had read a bunch of sleep sites that told me I was messing her up by allowing her to cuddle at night when she cries - even while teething. Having just written that sentence I realize how inane that idea is. She's a baby in pain. She needs to be hugged and snuggled. Nursing doesn't work as well for us either. LO rejects nursing all the time now - either distracted or crying....occasionally because she is trying crawl and nurse at the same time. I hit a point last night where I signed up for a coursera course because I might as well be learning something new while this is going on. Epigenetics. It ends tomorrow. I have about 6 hours of videos to go through and quizzes to take between now and then. I'm predicting I'll have the time.

Hang in there ladies. When V cut his top 4 it was the WORST few weeks. It did get enter (slightly) after that. Now he's only up twice, but at predictable times so I think my body is used to it now.

@maven212 Even with no fever, I'd still call pedi to have ears checked. Many a time no fever and the start of ear infections when I was a kid.

    So that didn't work. :(
Instead, I tried laying in bed with him, but that didn't work.
Living room to play. Put him in the bouncer with Baby Einstein on the iPad. He lasted 20 minutes.
Crawling. More breakfast. More playing. Poop (him, not me). Playing.
Milk,....nap. Just laid him down. I hope he sleeps for a couple hours.

  • I'm not one that's quick to suggest running to the doctor for every little thing but I'm not sure that teething would cause their ears to hurt THAT bad. Maybe a call to the Dr just to be safe?? I hope you all can get some sleep soon!!

  • @amberEA14 and @jg1011 I think you might be right. I'll check in the DH to see how she is doing today, and either take her to her pedi or a clinic.

@SurpriseAt39 I feel so bad for you. Sounds like he's really going through something. Hopefully you both get some sleep.
  • We've had one good night in two weeks. I hope something changes soon!

  • @gargita - thanks for asking! it was a little better. She was up maybe 5 times, mainly before 3 am. She is on Advil for the first time just now, but still getting up. We are on 4th time right now. Seems to be a comfort thing. She stays out provided she is on our bed, but she won't be spending the night on our bed, so who knows what the rest of the night will be like. I think I might take her to the clinic tomorrow morning. I'm in the process of convincing myself that her ears are the problem.
  • I should say, though, that the crazy screaming did not happen last night. She cried, but was consolable. No need for furball intervention.
  • Sigh. Up all night, consolable most of the time. We are off to the emergency clinic based out of her pedi's office this morning.

This has been A every time he has had an ear infection, NO TEMP! I watch him very close now because of it. I have taken him twice just to check up on it because of lil fussy and ear pulling, it was nothing. ( well once was his check up time too) Dr nurse said happens a lot with no temp. How Im testing is put finger tip in ear a little and if he's uncomfy there's an issue. He's always cried if he was sick when they looked in his ears. Pressure hurts so that's the only way I know to really check.

@lanea8712 thanks. So she does have an ear infection. We have to go back to the pedi's office tomorrow. Only nurses there today. I'm feeling super guilty for not going to the doctor sooner, but I'm so relieved to know that her misery is transient. Pool gal. It must hurt a lot. I'm wondering if maybe is just less tolerant of the crib or maybe the crib mattress is less comfortable, but over this period she only really sleeps well lying on the top of our bed. I really dislike her snoozing on the bed, but she is so uncomfortable DH and I caved....so she is lying in the middle of our bed while one of us watches over her. She'll be there until we go to bed. I just don't have the heart to try to repeatedly force her to sleep the whole night in the crib. When we hit the hay i'll move her over to the crib. Hopefully she will be able to hack it after that. Thanks everyone for your suggestions and support. Silly, but an ear infection just didn't occur to me.
  • Hope you all got rest last night, and that your LO gets well quick. They might give her a shot, they did once when A had a bad ear infection. Poor baby.
