Parenting after a Loss

Talk to me about crib sleeping

I must get DD into her crib. She is starting to roll a lot now (still just to her side) and she looks huge in her bassinet.

What age was LO when they started sleeping in their crib? How did you introduce them to it? Did you start with them sleeping in it partially through the night, or did you just go for it? How long did it take LO to adjust?

DD sleeps in her bassinet at my bedside and has done so since 12 wks when she moved out of her RnP. She's never slept in our bed and I don't nurse her in bed; we always wake up and sit in our recliner. I have no intention to sleep train, I just want her to have more space!

  • We moved DS to the crib around 4 months. He did great. The first night it took a lot of going in to comfort him. By the second night he was asleep in 10 minutes and only woke once during the night. By the third night he was able to put himself to sleep in less than 5 minutes. He still wakes up for 1 MOTN feeding, but I am okay with that.

I think most babies take the transition much easier than us mommas do.

  • G was in the arm's reach co-sleeper at the start.  We started with the crib for naps and then I tried "cold turkey" nights in the crib starting between 13 and 14 weeks in anticipation on going back to work.  Like you, when he needed to eat at night or fussed, I tended to get up and go into his room anyway since that's where the glider was, and that way DH could get some sleep since he was working -- so getting up to get him when he woke at night was not really a big deal.

I will say that we have a video monitor, and that things was a godsend during the transition, since I could see him so clearly and know he was safe and when he was awake and quiet.  We still love that thing and plan to add a second camera for this LO when he or she moves to their own room, too.

  • I moved her to her crib at 3 weeks.  Started with her afternoon nap and decided to bite the bullet and put her in there that night.  She had no issues with it.

  • We just went for it when DD was about 3 and a half months old, and she did totally fine. We had started swaddling her arms out, so when we moved her to her crib we transitioned out of the swaddle, too, and into a sleep sack. Sometimes they can surprise us! When they're ready, they're ready.

  • Just put C in his crib last night at 10 weeks. He woke up 4 times and I didn't sleep, just stared at the video monitor all night. He did pretty good for his first time though. Hopefully tonights even better.

My DS was in his PnP (by our bed) until about three months, then we turned our crib into a sidecar crib which he slept in from four months on (in between were a few nights in the PnP, and a few in the bed, while we tried to figure out what worked best for our family).  I don't think there was too much to adjust to, since I could still reach out and touch him whenever he needed to comforted :)

Then, by six months, he had been in his crib for two months, just fine - so we moved the crib into his bedroom (after I took a few weeks to finally bite the bullet and try - since darnit it's always harder on the Mama's isn't it?), and I guess because he'd already been using it for a while, it was no big deal for him.  He's nine months in a few days, and is still in the crib in his room ~

GL with the transition for your family :)

  • Thank you so much for your stories. I'm pretty motivated because last night I totally woke up DD when I got up to go to the bathroom. I think we'll all sleep better once we make the transition. I'm very emotional about it though

  • Sorry, I don't have any advice. We did things completely different. We put a twin size bed in her room right next the crib. She was in the crib from the first day we brought her home, and I slept in the twin bed for the first month. I had to slowly make my way back to my bed instead of transitioning her.
