miralax...

Long story short... my LO is trying NOT to have bowel movements. Ultimately, she doesn't like to do it (she's not constipated) so she is withholding her poop.  She has refused to drink prune juice or eat prunes.  My pedi suggested that I give her miralax for three weeks straight and then ween her off of it.  He said hopefully by then she will forget that she doesn't like to do that because she will likely forget that it felt uncomfortable when she goes.  I started the Miralax two days ago and my DD just has been going all day long.  I was just curious if anyone had ever given this to their child? Do they really keep having bowel movements non-stop or will that slow down to the normal diaper or so a day? Thanks!

Re: miralax...

  • I had to give my dd Miralax because she was having a hard time having bowel movements (she wasn't withholding them she just couldn't). I believe she was like that at the beginning but she became more regular. I recently switched to giving her yogurt every day instead of Miralax and it seems to be more natural for her. I would give your lo a week or so and if it doesn't slow down a little bit maybe call the dr back. Hope that helps you a little bit.

  • I havent personally, but my close friend does. She could have written this post herself. Her baby is afraid to go, etc.

She went alot at first because she was so backed up. You may need to cut back since you dont want her missing out on nutrients. She has had to adjust alot to get her regulated.

  • DS gets half a cap of miralax daily per his GI doctor because he gets constipated without...no matter how many prunes/pears/etc he eats. She forewarned us that in the beginning if he was really backed up we could see a LOT of pooping going on! You'd be surprised how much they can hold! If after a day or two it's still going on maybe call and ask but at first I think it's totally normal. And they told us in the beginning it would take a day or two for the miralax to kick in as well. Good luck! Poop issues suck.

  • We give it to DD for the same reasons. She actually had to be admitted to the hospital to clean her poor little system out and they sent us home on miralax. There might be so much because she is just backed up. If it doesn't slow down I would give her a bit less for a few days and see if it helps. We find the amount DD takes usually affects her a day or two later, so if you adjust amounts keep it consistent for 3-4 days to see what affect it has before changing again. DD now has 1 a day. Good luck! We switched from cloth to disposable for the time being because when she poops now, she POOPS. But she feels much better :)
