Family traditions?

1. What family traditions do you remember from when you were growing up? Do you plan to carry these on with your own children? 2. What new traditions are you starting or plan to start with your own children? Here's mine.... 1. When we were kids we always were allowed to choose one gift to open on Christmas Eve right before we went to midnight mass. I remember always hoping I'd pick the box with the new sweater or dress so I could wear it to church that night. Then on Christmas morning, we were not allowed to come downstairs before 7am so my sisters and I , who shared a bedroom, would lay awake for at least an hour waiting for it to be 7am on the nose! After presents were opened, mom always made pancakes. I'd like to carry on the tradition of making pancakes on Christmas morning. I remember how much I liked that growing up. 2. New traditions : I'd really like to take a picture of my son on his first day of school each year.

Re: Family traditions?

  • One tradition my mom did that now I cherish dearly is that she picked a theme for us for christmas ornaments...ex:mine angels. Each christmas we would get one new ornament of course related to our theme. And she would write on a notebook the year she purchased it. The year of my 18th birthday my mom gave me my ornaments in a box with the sheet of paper so I could decorate my own tree. It means so much to me. DD's theme I am thinking will be snowman. (Not sure yet)
My mom also made a scrapbook of all the cute schoolwork we would do she laminated our work and she just treasures those misspelled happy mother's day cards and I love that now as an adult I see all the stuff I use to do.
New tradition: Not very sure yet but I'm sure I will come up with my own traditions eventually.

  • My mom did the same thing with the ornaments. I will do this too. I love it. A friend of mine always had birthday cake on Xmas for Jesus' bday. Super cute if you're religious. Dinner time is family time. No tv.... This will be a definite must in my home.

  • New PJs from grandma on Christmas Eve. I am sure my mom will be happy to continue this one. I am trying to get the extended family to run/walk the thanksgiving day race with me. It's a fun one!

  • To be honest, the only family traditions my family has ever had was my grandmother's cooking.. she taught me some of her recipes so now I am the only one besides her who knows it.

I cannot wait to make our own family traditions.

  • Every 4th of July growing up, we would stop for Dairy Queen on the way to fireworks. I always loved that tradition, but then one year we just stopped doing it. I'll be picking that tradition back up.

Any tradition involving ice cream is a good one!
