Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

For those of you whose kids eat what you eat...

What do you typically serve for dinner? My LO, who is just over a year old, was a late bloomer with table/ finger foods. Now that he's finally caught on, I'd like to make just one dinner for us each night, but I could use some new ideas.... Please share!

Re: For those of you whose kids eat what you eat...

  • Last night we had chicken fajitas (his was a deconstructed fajita) and tonight we're having paremsan crusted chicken with yam fries and sauteed zucchini.  Essentially, we make a meat and veggie (sometimes a starch) and he just eats that.  Sometimes we have to deconstruct things, sometimes not, sometimes we have to cut things up, sometimes not.  Sometimes we add a fruit to his meal if our meal isn't entirely baby friendly (too spicy, difficult for him to eat, etc.).

Some of his faves are pork chops, chicken, asparagus, zucchini, peppers, green beans, plain pasta, spaghetti, mac & cheese, baked potato, yam fries.  Really, he'll eat just about anything but eggs so solids have been pretty easy on us so far.

  • DD pretty much eats whatever we eat but she's allergic to dairy so we've had to alter our diet.  We make spaghetti, tacos, sloppy joes, chicken and vegetables, rice, pasta salad, burgers, brats, etc. It's really nice now that she eats what we eat but I don't enjoy having to cook every night!  We've started giving DD leftovers from the night before because she's hungry as soon as we get home from work and then we make ourselves a meal, repeat the next day.

  • Anything we're eating. I mean if there's salsa involved he has mild, or if there's chile...he doesn't get the chile, but he is offered anything we're eating.

  • I don't make anything special because he eats with us, it's just the same type of foods we normally eat for dinner.

This week we've had baked penne, tequila lime chicken tacos and arugula pizza.  Tonight we're having tortilla soup.  The rest of the week we're having papoosas, spinach artichoke chicken, crab rangoon, grilled chicken sandwiches with avocado, Chinese chicken salad, and poblano sopes.

  • We cook the same way we always have and DD just eats what we eat, even the spicy stuff.

    Recent dinners:
    fish with quinoa and artichokes
    steaks with corn and coleslaw
    pasta with chicken and kale
roast chicken with potatoes, carrots & fennel
    chard & red onion ravioli

  • DD eats exactly what we are eating. I usually cut it into smaller pieces, but she eats it. I usually give her a bowl of fruit for dessert.
  • My two toddlers don't always cooperate with my dinners. The two year old has become a bit picky so she may or may not eat what we have. The things she will definitely eat are macaroni and cheese, meatloaf, rice and tofu, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, roast chicken with ketchup. The one year old isn't as picky but its not always a guarantee he will eat what I give him. My dinners are pretty standard... Roast or baked chicken with various sauces, casseroles, pastas, etc. served with steamed or roasted veggies.
  • Some of DD's favorite meals:

Black bean burgers or you can also make black bean enchiladas with this recipe

She loves homemade black beans and rice. ( I am Cuban so we do this a lot.

spaghetti and meatballs.  I use this recipe

    greek spinach quiche

breaded chicken cutlets.  I bread them with italian bread crumbs and bake them in the oven and I serve it with mixed roasted veggies (zucchini, carrot, cauliflower, etc.)  and a baked sweet potato

I made a veggie "meatloaf" today for tomorrow night's dinner.  Haven't tried it yet but it smells pretty good

  • My LO loves Mexican food! He likes to eat the rice and black beans. I let him feed himself. It's messy but he is happy and we can eat in peace :)
