Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Travel & Sleep

DS is almost 7 months old, and we are taking him on his first plane trip from NC to Seattle. We can take his car seat and stroller for free, but since checking baggage is so expensive, we don't want to bring the PnP, especially since it's so bulky. Does anyone have any ideas for sleeping? I'm assuming we're only going to have one bed where we're staying (it's a wedding, so we won't know much about accommodations until we get there). Travel sleepers are super expensive for something we'll probably only use once before he outgrows it. Does anyone have any DIY ideas for sleeping? While Rowan isn't much of a roller, he's a squirmer. He's pivoted himself in his crib to where his head was at the other end than when he started, so he definitely needs boundaries, so that excludes a simple palette on the floor.

We had a friend actually suggest a cardboard box with the top cut off. It sounds horrible but I'm beginning to think that's our only option. He could sleep with us, except DH is a roller. Anyone used the box idea before? Or any other ideas? TIA!

Re: Travel & Sleep

  • I would be interested in suggestions as well. We're going to visit friends that don't have a crib. LO is definately a roller!

  • The only thing I can think of besides the box thing is just a palette on the floor with pillows lining the sides. Although, what would we use for a mattress?

  • Are you staying at a hotel? You can usually request a crib for your room.

  • I don't know for sure but I think it might be a rented house. :-/

  • Hmm.. laundry basket, there's an idea. He and I would be fine in the bed together, but DH is a roller. It would depend on what size the bed is when we get there. May try and borrow a PnP from someone, but I don't know anyone off hand that has one.

  • I would see if friends of friends have a PnP. My mom borrowed one from a coworker when I took LO back to Illinois.

  • I was also going to say a laungry basket.
  • Can you try one of these?

  • Apparently you can rent gear. I googled, https://babysaway.com/.

We've just laid a few blankets down on the floor before. Even a squirmy baby would be fine.

Who is renting the house? I'd ask about whether the house has a PNP, many do. Or the agency might have a source. When traveling with babies I don't go anywhere without knowing every single detail. I have no issues calling and asking every question I have.

  • Do you have time to order something like this?  This is what I was going to get for my toddler when we go on a trip, but it sounds like it would work for you too:

    Travel Bed
DS (7 years old) from FET in 2010
DD (5 years old) from IUI in 2012
TTC 3rd and final!: IUI #1 in progress!
  • Could you buy a cheap $60 PNP online and ship it to your destination?  I use a PNP or I Co-sleep when I travel.  Bring a cheap blow up mattress for your rolling husband and co'-sleep

  • Lurker here... But just wanted to say you should be able to check your PnP for free along with the stroller and carseat. Check with your airline, but at least on Delta when I've flown, they count that as a special baby item and allow it for free.
