BTDT Moms: Constipation

When did you start taking a suppository/laxative?

What did you do to help with the constipation?

With Mimi I did not know to expect the constipation so I was very miserable. With LJ, I took the stool softeners and drank plenty of water and that still did not help. I am having my RCS on Thursday and I do not want to go through that uncomfortable feeling again if I don't have to.

  • I took them daily from c/s until after that first BM.  I also drank lots of water.  I don't remember how long it took after my first c/s, but this last baby I had on a Monday and finally had a BM that Friday.

  • I was given some at the hospital an hour before my c/s was scheduled. It still took 3 days but I felt okay.

I had surgery to my uterus a year before my c-section. They gave me colace in the hospital and i took it at at home afterwards too.. My first BM was 4 days after the surgery and I got stuck on the toilet for 4 hours trying to get it out (sorry about the tmi) , it was so hard I just couldn't push it out, I had to send DH to get me suppositories while I was stuck on the toilet. once I managed to get a little bit out, the rest was much softer and came out easy.

so when i went in for my c-section i wanted to avoid repeating that disaster. i drank a lot of prune juice for 2 days before the c-section and made sure not to eat anything constipating. The day before the c-section I just ate soup and drank so much prune juice I gave myself diarrhea, which completely emptied my bowels. Then I took Colace in the hospital and ate only soup, fruit, eggs and yogurt until the first BM. I also drank a little bit of prune juice but not the first 2 days after the c-section on the nurse's orders. I dont remember how long it took before the first BM, i think i was still in the hospital but it was super soft and came out super easy

  • I ate lots of fiber during pregnancy (when, honestly, my constipation was worse) and after my c/s.  With DS, I brought Fiber One bars to the hospital with me and snacked on those, in addition to eating fiber-rich food at meals.  And I drank a lot of water and took Colace.

  • I have had three c/s and the constipation is the worse part for me.  I swear with my second c/s I thought I was going to have to go back to the hospital for a poopectomy.  With my third c/s, I started taking stool softeners about a week before the scheduled c/s.  While at the hospital, I took every stool softener they gave me, ate raisin bran and spinach salads every day,  drank tons of water and juice and walked as soon as they would let me.  All that did nothing.   Finally, on the third morning after my c/s, I could see the writing on the wall and asked for a suppository.  I got relief in thirty minutes.  Now I would recommend that to anyone.  If you have gone 4 days without a BM, just ask for a suppository.  It is better to get relief within an hour instead of waiting hours or days for other methods to work.

  • I was taking Colace and fiber gummies before my c-section. I continued the Colace in the hospital and made sure to eat fruit and drink fruit juice with every meal, along with tons of water in between meals. I went on day three and it really wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. I'm still struggling a bit with constipation though, so I am still taking the Colace and fiber gummies as well as all the fruit, water, fiber cereal, etc.

  • I was given a stool softner 2-3x a day in the hospital and a BM the next day. I still take them now if I need help.
  • I took a softener every day the last month of my pregnancy anyways since everything got so backed up. I didn't go for days after my c/s so I took a laxative and was...cured...the next day. It didn't hurt or anything, it only did when I was pregnant, I'd definitely do the laxative again.

I also recommend the suppository.  I ended up getting one at 1am on the last night of my hospital stay.  I couldn't take it anymore - I had been taking Colace, eating fiber-rich foods, and the nurses gave me "the cocktail" (prune/apple/lemon juice) twice a day, and none of it worked.  Just take the suppository when it's first offered, not on the 4th day after several failed attempts at pooping.
  • I was given stool softeners at the hospital and they gave me a suppository on the third day after delivery. I was having a lot of trouble, it was really painful. When I got home, I used over the counter stool softeners and drank a lot of juice. I also ate berries and clementines and sometimes took Gas-X. The juice helped the most I think.
