I had some ready, but my labor wasn't long enough to need it. I got lime essential oil since that's one of my favorite scents. I'll get it out this time if I need it. It could help ease any nausea that might crop up and just give pleasant feelings if it's a scent you love.
My doula tried it with me, but it was about when I was in transition. I remember thinking it was really really stupid to think that a smell would help me when I was havinganeffingbabyrightnow.
It might have been more pleasant at another point in my labour.
I brought a lavender oil diffuser, my favorite massage oil, and a heating pad filled with rice that was lavender scented. I didn't end up wanting any of it during labor, but the things didn't take up much room in my hospital bag and I was glad I brought them just in case.
I never even thought about asking permission to use aromatherapy but that's probably a good idea. I was planning to use lavendar for calming, possibly peppermint, and maybe clary sage.
No need to ask, Honestly there are very few things you really need to ask permission for, if your hungry don't ask just eat, if your thirsty - drink, if the room smells awful put some oils in a diffuser in a safe place. Be careful about oils in bath or shower as they can make the floor of it slippery and dangerous. better to put them in the sink and turn on the hot water. Do some research, not all oils are safe to inhale during pregnancy/birth.
