Slightly High amniotic fluid level

My doctor told me that at 21 weeks one twin had slightly high amniotic fluid. She said she liked to see it at 8 and it was measuring 8.7. She said that it could be a precursor for Gestational diabetes and wanted me to take the glucose test now and then again at 28 weeks. I felt that the measurement was so little over what her acceptable range was and I can't really find anything on the internet to agree with what she is saying. I am leaning toward not taking the test. Any advice?

  • What Was the other twins level? are they mo-di or di-di? Personally I'd just take the test. You need to do it anyway.

  • The other one was below 8 can't remember exactly though. They are mono-di. I was just trying to avoid taking it twice.
  • Wow, I didn't realize they were ever that high. I've always been in the 4-5 range and told that was good.

I'd just go ahead and take the test. It wasn't a big deal at all.

Since they are mono/di, I would be more concerned about TTTS than GD.  One of mine was 11 at 22 weeks and they were diagnosed with TTTS.  I'm not saying that's what's going on with yours, it could be anything or nothing but I hope your Dr. is going to monitor those fluid levels closely.  However I would just go ahead and do the test if that's what they recommend.
  • One of my twins had a slightly elevated fluid level, and we were referred for a special u/s test with the pediatric cardiologist. I was all worried and everything turned out to be just fine. It seems like because MoMs are monitored so closely there's a higher chance to catch something that might be a bit off. Don't worry too much.
I would do the test to put your mind at ease for sure.
  • I had the same thing happen with me. My midwife (and the three OBs who later saw my u/s results) said acceptable range was 2-8 but they really wanted them more toward the mid part of the range, not the outskirts, and my mono-di boys were 3 and 8.7 at our u/s. I did the GD test early, was slightly elevated, but they were OK with me skipping the second test if I did the GD diet so that's what I opted for. I'd had diet controlled GD before so we just assumed that's what it was. My guys didn't end up with TTTS (we ended up monitoring every week) and were born healthy at 37wks. I would take the test if that's what they recommend, and see if you can opt out of the later screen.

  • TTTS, that's what I would be worried about too.  The other would have to be less than 2 and the other over 8, that's the Stage 1 criteria.  But if one is normal, then I'd be less concerned I guess.  4-5 is a normal range.  That's where we were after the surgery corrected the TTTS.  You don't want to mess around with GD either though, so take the test.  My doc would have sent me twice as well, but I had the first test so late, that the seocnd test would have been done only a couple weeks later, so she let me go without.  I did have to do both the 1 hour and 3 hour though.
