December 2013 Moms

Is it too soon?

Hi everyone,

Is it too soon to start preparing for the baby's room? I found a crib I like but its going to take 10 weeks to arrive. So my question is, is it too soon to place an order? And start painting the baby room? I figured since I have the time and energy now why not do it before I get bigger and have no energy. What do you all think I should do?

Re: Is it too soon?

  • You can definitely start now--especially if the crib takes 10 weeks to arrive.  I think it's better to be prepared earlier than later, as I was induced at 35w for pre-e and only had a few things ready.  I will certainly be prepared much earlier this time around!

Go for it and have fun!

  • I believe some momma's have already bought their furniture and began the nesting process of getting the nursery ready. I say go for it!
  • My nursery is about 80% finished.

  • Go for it! We are starting this weekend and have already ordered a couple things offline. Starting now will give you plenty of time to prepare it and get it exactly how you want by December. I've read that a couple people will order cribs and get bad parts, and if your crib is already taking that long to get to you, you don't want to have to do a return last minute.
    Welcome Lily Anna!

  • I already painted the walls and set up the crib (hand me down from sister), and some decorations. I feel like I am so lazy already that 3rd trimester I am just going to be a gluton laying around doing nothing. Good to get that stuff done early.

We ordered our crib today. They say 12 weeks but with DS it was around 14 I think. We got them at the same place. So we ordered earlier this time. Have fun with the nursery.

Eta: My water broke early with DS. It broke the day after the crib was delivered. Thus the reason for ordering a little bit earlier this time.

  • Oh gosh.  Go for it!  Our nursey is already pink, we have bought tons of things, the glider is set up, her stroller is set up, rock 'n play sleeper is ready to go - she has pink hangers hanging in her closet.. I could go on!  We couldn't wait any longer!  We just need the crib (MIL is buying), changing table (my brother is buying) and her dresser (it's on it's way!).. oh and curtains!

  • Most definitely start now!!!

  • It's never too early if what you find is exactly what you want and on sale.  If those to criteria ever present simaltaneously, you're allowing to actually trip over yourself and just fling a fistful of cash at the person selling your item.

  • No, it's fun getting the baby stuff together. I was hoping to order my crib sometime next week but alas, the one I want has been out of stock for two months. It may be time for me to go back to the drawing board.

  • Agree with PP's, start now if you can! I want to the have big stuff, like furniture, painting, etc. finished early so that I have places to put all the smaller items when we get them. And you can find better deals if you're not pressed for time.
  • I had a similar issue. The one I wanted took 20 weeks! How does something take 20 weeks? Now I am back to the drawing board. I think it is okay to start to now, especially if it takes 10 weeks to arrive. You don't want to cut it too close to the end. Just remember if you plan to have a shower, you will get a lot of stuff there. Some people may get you the blankets/lamps/etc for the room if you put them on your registry. So I would hold off on that stuff.

  • Not too early to order it! As far as painting, go for it. We are finishing up our painting because we wanted to do it when the weather was nice and we could have the windows open for better ventilation.

If you have energy to start building your baby nest, I say go for it.
  • Our nursery is painted and new crib and changer are assembled already. Definitely not too early. We go back to work (teachers) next week so we wanted to get the big things out of the way but still don't think it's too early.

  • Wow, thanks for the motivation ladies. I am definitely getting on it asap! Home depot, here I come! Show me some pink paint!!! :)

Is anyone doing anything fun with their walls? Or is everyone doing a solid color?

We did solid pink.  We will play it up with art, curtains and all of that.  We may get a decal, not sure though.

    Exactly this.

Delievered DS at 34 weeks because of pre-e, so glad we didn't wait till 30/35 weeks to do order
  • We have ordered all of furniture and most of it has come in. The crib is put together. I picked out a paint color but we are waiting to see if the navy is going to move us in October before we
Paint. I found these vinyl stickers at Home Depot for $1. They are 8 1/2 by 11 inches and you paint on them and then stick on the wall to see if you like the color. I've decided to paint those and make stripes on the wall
  • @MeladyMal...I love stripe walls. We did them in the dining room and they look amazing. I'm concerned if we do it in the baby room it's going to be too many stipe walls in the house. What do you think?

Good idea about the stickers!! I'll have to try that too :)

  • OP looks like you and I are due the same day. We already bought the paint for the nursery 2 weeks ago and plan on starting to paint as soon as DH gets the room cleared out, hopefully within the next few weeks. We will probably order the furniture in a week or 2. I would rather be done early than wait until I'm too uncomfortable to want to do anything.

What day are you due? I'm having a hard time deciding which color to go with. I don't want the room to be overwhelming with PINK, PINK, and more PINK. What color are you doing? Are you having a boy or girl?

  • We bought all of our furniture like 2 weeks after we found out we were expecting! Now that we just found out it is a girl, we are ready to decorate!!!! I don't think it's ever to early to be prepared!

No, I think once you get to the halfway mark it's definitely fine to start! Like PPs said, furniture can take weeks to arrive, and things like painting and other improvements take time also. Both last time and this, I started the nursery after my a/s. I just bought crib bedding for this LO last week (lucky for me it was on sale!) and picked a paint color yesterday.

  • I started a month ago lol. It's just easier for me to get it done during the summer. I say go for it!
  • We r doing this with the walls. But the gray and blue will be opposite.

Love it! It's going to look adorable! You gotta take a picture once you are done and share it :) I'd love to see it.

  • Deff will!
  • I'd order now, in case it's damaged during shipping & you have to replace parts or it takes longer than anticipated. Also then you can take your time & not feel rushed. Plus, it's fun.
